I think we are way off topic here But it's a nice discussion. I think it's accepted fact that sunroof is no good if you want to track your car seriously but on the other hand, it's nice to have daily amenity for cruising around town and occasional spirited driving - which I argue is more important to most people. So if you got a sunroof there's no need to feel bad about it, it's still an evo.

While I can't find anybody taking the X sunroof out to weigh it, I found some info here

http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=222481

Basically the guy took the M3 sunroof out and it's about 48 pounds (33 + 15 for the glass). I would think Mitsubishi is around the ballpark...

all that weight on the roof is huge, that same weight on the floor pan or your engine bay wouldn't be nearly as big a deal.

some people have a hard time understanding this...

^--- this. And until they drive the cars back to back in a performance oriented fashion, they'll continue to be ignorant to that fact.

I think all the people that defend the sun roof option would never actually drive their Evo hard enough to notice.

If I had it to do again I would get it with as little options as humanly possible and use the ton of money I would have saved to do the rest myself.
Reasons:

  • SSS is nice but goes to crap if you daily all weather
  • the nav is garbage and expensive to update
  • I ended up replacing most of the other optional things for better quality parts (granted I have pretty high goals track-wise)
  • The parts I upgraded still came to less $ than the options I originally bought

I don't think ppl are defending it. I'm just saying there's no need to make other feel bad about that option, it has its merits.

I definitely agree with you fast08, it definitely has merits. And not trying to make anyone feel bad. I used to love sunroofs, until I felt the difference between the two, and many sunburns on my forehead .

But when it comes to wanting to drive a performance car in a performance environment, it has a negative effect. If it's just DD, by all means get the options that make you happy .

I beg to differ and if that point really does exist where you notice a difference, good for you youd be slightly quicker if all the other factors where the same on the car and driver, i didnt buy my car to compete against anybody, just to have fun and try for personal bests

Agreed which is why I had to buy a '11 because I had to have a sunroof. I missed it so much when I bought my subu without one that it was a no brainer for me. BTW, I do plan on tracking it after the first year as well.

just like everyone is saying leather looks nice but in the long wrong it will just fade/rip/etc and make it look old and ugly .. i had a bmw e46 with leather and after a while seats started ripping and made the interior look ugly .. and as for sunroof i hardly ever used it on any of my cars i had so i didn't really care for it and also heard sometimes seals could go bad and let water in ... but to each their own i guess.

Wouldn't have even bought this beast without the leather/sunroof/hid's/nav.

You don't buy a 44k evo and worry about a little body flex/extra weight from a sunroof.

If I take it to the track more than a couple times that will be surprising, bought this thing to cruise around on weekends in nice weather.

If I was hardcore auto xing it I would have bought it stripped down though, no need for all those luxury items for a track car...

I have all that as well but I never use my nav. My last X didn't have it and I wanted it badly but now I have it and never use it.

But without nav the dash looks very ugly imo. But I love my heated seats!
