Gas octane discussion.
Great question...if you want to damage your engine.
Running a lower than required octane will do nothing but hurt performance and potentially damage the engine. The stock ECU on a stock car can compensate for some octane issues, but if you're ripping around on 87-octane you will be knocking badly and causing your engine harm.
If your budget is tight skip the fancy coffee or bottle of soda, that alone will offset the cost of premium vs. regular.
If you just can't afford premium gas then the Evo is not the car for you.

I wouldn't run <91 without a tune for that set up. Even still, if you want a custom economy tune, you'd want to weigh the cost of the tune versus what you'd save in gas price and mpg. However, most EVO owners are geared towards maximizing power and performance, not necessarily the inherent efficiency, so you'll have a little less support in that area.

If you consider running low octane, maybe the Evo isn't for you. I only run 100 now,but I ran 91 for a year. It's $6.79/gallon but I drive it only once or twice a week if that. Smells lovely.lol

I've only ever been to one state where most stations carry 93: Missouri. All across Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska I only ever saw 91 as the best. Washington carries 92 octane in most places. The manual stating a need for 93 seems to be wishful thinking.
On a road trip recently I got down to E and had to put in a couple gallons of 90 octane since the middle-of-nowhere station had just that. I checked the manual and it says you should use 93, but if unavailable use 91. It also said lower grade quality gasoline may be used, but only in emergency situations. My next tank was 93.

Also for those in Missouri - 94 can be found in Springfield and Lebanon.
