Advice on shopping for a 2010+ used X MR

Greetings,

I'm in the process of looking for a used 2010+ MR Premium or Touring and I do have a few questions.

1. What to look for in these cars in terms of abuse/excessive wear? I'm looking for things specific to EVOs and the 6spd dual clutch, not things like "worn tires".

2. What are the weak points of the EVO x MR to look for in general?

3. I'm having difficulty differentiating the base MR from Premium, what the best future to look for in order to identify the trim level? The touring is easy because it has the sunroof... I also understand that both Premium and Touring (which includes the Premium trim) have better sound insulation-correct?

I test drove the MR a few weeks ago and I'm really looking forward to finding mine and taking her home.

Thank you and just in case "flame suit on".

This is the only one I am qualified on, the premium has leather seats, keyless entry and the rockford 10 speaker upgrade.

Here are pics of my MR premium interior:

You cant really tell if the car was abused from the looks that much, during a test drive you can tell though. The smoothness of shifting for example, taking the RPMs above 4k while keeping it there for about 5 seconds and see if you will get a "slow down" message on the HUD. Stock SST cooler goes out before the clutches do, you have to pay real close attention and listen to the car and have a some what education guess if the the sound you are hearing is normal. Carfax also helps to see if there has been anything done to it and you could research more into as to what exactly happened.

This. There is not a whole lot to be able to tell about the SST's abuse just by looking at it. Test drive it and if everything is normal, shifting is smooth, than it's prolly a good car. I would steer clear of any Evo with cheaper mods. If the owner has put alot of care/money into the car, or if it BONE stock, that would mean alot to me. Ask to see any maintenance records- the SST's maintenance is quiet expensive..

Also, don't forget that a used 2010+ Evo is still under warranty, unless the guy drove the **** out of it. I would steer clear of any non bone-stock cars, as you may be subject to warranty issues if/when you need to bring it in for work.

Keep in mind that the MR Touring was specific only to the 2010 year model, it came with all leather seats (no suede middle) and speakers, sunroof, keyless, etc the only option on it was the NAV. The 2011 MR are the ones that the premiun and touring trims were given as an option

Thank you for the input, this will be helpful. Especially since there aren't so many EVOs MR for sale (used or new). I haven't made up my mind yet if I will take the risk with a used one or if I should just bit the bullet and get a new one.

So no specific weaknesses? I'm coming from the Subaru world and there's a few things like: weak welds on the firewall on 2008+, early 2009+ with faulty crankshaft bearings, etc...

Any specific signs that can tell me if the car was tuned and returned stock for sale? Again, in my subbie world, the OEM heatshield off the turbo would be missing or may have been trimmed as the after market DP does not fit otherwise, etc...

As far as warranty is concerned, it's true that it is there and it's a good thing. However, it does not give me 100% confidence. For example: I buy a car with 15k miles, at 25k miles the transmission goes (not my fault, I did not abuse it but maybe the first owner did). Dealer opens the transmission, says they can say signs of abuse, therefore warranty claim denied. This could apply to the engine as well.

Bite the bullet and get a new one, that is the only way to know for sure that it was broken in properly (which ever way is proper for you, I don't want to start another brake in debate), not beat on and if modified done properly.

I am also a traitor from the Subaru world, let me tell you the Evo is on another planet. It feels much more solid than my Sti was, which may seem a general statement but it is very much a true one.

I'm still looking for an evo MR and have been reading more online about the TC-SST... I saw the sub-forum on here and read a few threads as well and it got me concerned about the lifespan of the SST. I understand it's fairly new transmission but I figure I'll still ask the following: given normal use, 15k miles/year and around 10 auto-x a year/not more than a stage 2 tune, how long can I expect it to last until I will need a rebuilt?

This may actually be a deal breaker for me as I rather live with a manual and deal with the traffic than have to worry about when I'll have to sell my left kidney to repair the STT.... ;-)

I've only heard good things from the SST. As long as you change the fluid/filter regularly it should last a long time. Don't underestimate the power of maintenance. . The only thing I could think of is because you are using it for Auto-X, maybe you would need to upgrade the tranny cooler? If you are so concerned about it, why not get the GSR
