Who's owned a VIII or IX before switching to a X? Differences and opinions? I do alot of aggressive driving and it will be my DD as well. Also will be doing maybe 3-4 track days a year. Given I don't break anything

What mods did you have?
the first time i hit the track all i had was a k&N drop in filter.. nothing else.. second time i had cobb turbo inlet hose and cobb hard pipes with cobb access port stage one files that jon fine tunned for me . third time i went with stage 1 93 octane files that jon fine tuned for me. the forth time i went my tires were getting pretty sketchy due to not having a whole lot of rubber left.. id say it was the funnest time at the track 4 wheel drifts galore and not a hint of understeer!
here's a link to the course
http://www.stratotech.ca/park_facility/track_layout.pdf

turn two, a subaru went off the track in the other group. he went through one hay bail and in to another.. 6' from the fence.. and the highway is right there on the other side of the fence. (boiled his break fluid)
this track is small but has the best pavement in alberta. the race city track is full of pot holes etc.
it was fun as heck.. PS at the track i find that using the shifter over the paddles feels more natural.. and since the paddles are on the colum it helps a tonne because they never move.. just get used to where they are.. lol and the instructor had to keep reminding me to not shift in the corner but before the corner. anyways like i said you can't go wrong with this car!! seriously it's a scalple. you point the car and that's where it goes. keep your head up and looking where you want to go.. even if your drifting you'll get there!

I heard that GSR has more tuning potential compared to an MR but I don't want to mislead you. For me, I can't live without a clutch pedal and heel-toe shifting and automatic trannies cannot replicate the real manual feeling, IMO ..but it's a personal preference of course ;]

I'm a left foot braker. I've heard of the MR transmission (?) overheating with heavy LFB usage. Don't know too much of the details of why this is. Is this true?

There are two models now.. use to be three. MR, SE, and GSR.

MR
*SST transmission
*suede/leather interior
*2-piece rotors
*Bilistein struts
and a couple other nice things..

SE (only available 2010)
*SST transmission
*cloth seats
*Bilistein struts
can't remember if it has 2-peice front rotors..
Basically a mix between MR & GSR

GSR
*5-speed
*cloth seats
and most of the other stuff (HID's, big spoiler, better sound system, leather seats if you're getting a 2011,..) are options.

i have had 04 , 07 , 08 STI 03 EVO 8 GSR 08 EVO X GSR and 08 EVO X MR and i will tell you my 07 STI blew up bone stock 3 times subaru had to replace the ringland in #4 #2 #4

The x wakes up to power so much easier than a subaru could dream of The handling is night and day over a subaru the EVO feels so connected the subaru felt very light in corners in the steering and the rear didnt feel as planted. I would not go back to a subaru after owning a EVO. I currently have a 08 EVO X MR i love the TC-SST and the nice extra features the MR gets. My MR is bone stock besides a tune it dynoed 307 WHP at ENGLISH RACING

Nope, it has bigger trunk and "better interior" ( I personally like Evo's interior better also, should I mention the seats?) yes STI has better door stills and pedals.. and I guess that's about it, it's still not a Mercedes or Audi for Christ's sake..

it's funny when I hear that "echo"from people over and over again.. I guess magazines started this, when they were trying to find some BS for the "CONS" section , they just didn't want to say "Evo wins in each category" haha.. but instead they wanted to be "objective", oh well..

Evo comes with a way better stereo, STI had the worst stereo I have ever owned(even worse than a cheap Focus)
it's also funnier when die-hard fans say "STI is a better daily driver" like they actually buy these cars to use for a daily driver.. it's a poor excuse for a car that designed to be a performer when actually doesn't "perform" good enough (compared to an Evo)

^ actually I bought my STi as a DD beater. I agree the performance is superior with the Evo. If it wasn't for the ringland issues, I'd gladly keep it.

Also, It would be absurd to use the GR STi for track (not 1/4) or autox. The GR STi is more of a crossover vehicle to me.

So my plan is to trade in the STi (DD) & sell the s2k (track). I'll use the Evo for dual purpose (albeit with compromises on both as a DD & track/autox).
