Current Sti owner might be purchasing an Evo X
This is exactly why I cant live with the fact that my #4 piston can go any minute now. Since you automatically ASSUME that you'll be good since you have a tune. Being pretty much stock as far as bolt on power mods go for the last 2 years, I would like to start working on that area but I now have no hope for my car and Subaru. Also dont want to hassle with going with a built motor for just ~350whp. Thats stupid.
If you're used to and love driving, you may miss manual as I did. I had the MR, drove it for 2.5 years with TBE and intake stage 2 custom tune @ 332awhp/314 torque with the first gear limiter removed. For myself, even at that level it wasn't as fun as my stock form GSR. You just can't replicate the complete control of a manual tranny with the twin clutches at slow city speeds. Make sure you can live with this notion if you go MR.
As for the STI, I almost bought a 2011 instead of another Evo, but after doing the research, I was too scared about the 4th cylinder ringland failures. On Naosic forums, they concluded that it didn't matter whether you were stock, lightly modded or tuned, that cylinder failure could happen due to a physical fuel starvation problem that Subaru is ignoring and only fixing on a case by case basis. It probably won't happen to u since you've driven it for 3 years now, but who knows. This is not a common problem on the Evo

Also, I don't know that people are giving the STI a fair shake. It's more than just the trunk space. Fuel economy is another mark in favor of the STI. If you want power and performance, go with the EVO. If you strictly want a daily driver, the STI might still be an option for you.
Forgive me as I have no knowledge of Mitsubishi's AWD system. I was under the impression that Subaru's was more superior. So correct me if Im wrong. Doesnt Subaru's Symmetrical AWD system and its differentials have that torque vector you are talking about? Power transfer between axles and also from front to rear? Are they not the same?
I like that mean BA look on the front end of the X. IMO, my butt shot of my hatch with the red taillight overlays looks pretty sexy. So I think Subaru's rear end design looks better on the hatch than it did on the sedans. Personal preference I guess. LOL.
Ok I havent test drove an Evo yet but wow are you serious a stock Evo felt faster than your stage 1 Sti? 'Cuz thats where Im at now and rather than going stage 2 and deal with all this bull****, I might as well start on a better platform. Yes thats exactly what I thought as well too before I bought my car. Subaru's got more torque and should be faster since its 2.5l vs. 2.0l...guess I bought the wrong car

Ringland(4th piston failure) failure is not the only downside of an STI. Obviously many people are unaware of the superior AWD system of the Evos. Whatever you do to your STI, it will not have the Torque vectoring AWD handling. Been there, done that.
STI's advantages:
Yes STI has a bigger trunk and that ends there.
EVO:
better motor, better handling, better seats, modability, responsiveness to the mods, better gearing(5 spd),better looking also(Subaru was never able to make nice rear end design),smoother power delivery, higher revving engine
On the paper you would expect to get a better low-end torque and overall power out of a 2.5 lt engine right?Wrong, In reality a stock Evo feels a lot faster than my Stage 1 STI that I recently sold(check my signature), stage 1 Evo (just Cobb Ap) was waaay waster than my friends stage 2 STI and now I am stage 2 and there's no comparison. I tried so hard to love the STIs(well I bought 2 of them) and each time was disappointing.I don't know if it's because their engine design flaw or TMIC that causes the heat soak . I seriously don't know WTF but Evo wins pretty much on each category you can think of(but the trunk space, pfft)

I think you'll be happy with the evo purchase..
as for the awd system... not sure about subi but it's my understanding that the evo will not only go front to back side to side but will also do an X pattern front drivers rear passenger or front passenger to rear drivers.. i really dont know much about the system other than the fact it's one awesome system..
This summer i went to my first road course event ( no prior experiance) driving an mr in auto S-sport mode with first level tc off. in the drivers meeting the instructors split up the group from high power cars to low power cars. i assumed i would not be in the same class as the bmw M roadster, 135, C6 corvette GTR CTS-V full on race car rx7 (blew up dring lapping) Anyways the low power group was mx5's mini's wrx sti cobalt ss rsx-s etc.. me being a noob figured okay low power group sounds like thats for me.. Nope.. the instructor says evo in the high power group... from there on in i was intimidated and felt out of place.. starting to shake in my pants.. (seriously i was sooo nervious)
everyone went out on the course as the instructors talked about each corner and placed out cones for breaking points apexes exits etc.. we all walked the course.. next high power cars started up idled for a few minutes we all lined up i made sure i was at the very back cause i was scared crapless..
anyways we all went out.. my first few laps i was just trying to warm up the tires and breaks etc as was everyone else.. then things got hot and next thing i know i'm actually with the group except for the gtr and a shelby cobra which were about to lap us in a lap or two.. next thing i knew the ctsv is getting blue flaged to let me by.. then the vette then the m roadster and having an epic battle with a 135 then our session was over (first of 4)
long story short, there was a bunch of noob drivers like my self out there and a few good drivers.. well guess what.. the driver of the 135 was one of the instructors.. he came up to me when all the sessions were over and asked if i was fibbing about being out to the track before.. i said nope first time.. his words then were..and i quote. "That is one amazing car" then began to tell me what i, as a driver was doing wrong..
after going back 3 more times to the road course events.. with a fairly stock evo mr i managed to get with in 11 seconds of the course record.. my dad in his car is 4 seconds off the course record. with double the horsepower... all in all You wont miss the sti ! ps i would have loved to go out with the other group just because there were two subiee's in the group. and who know's maybe id have had an epic battle with an sti.. either way the road course events this summer were a blast!
PPS On my second lapping day it was very very HOT out.. in Super sport auto mode i did have a transmisison over heat a few times.. basicly kills the power limits to like 3krpm untill the tranny cools .. I did figure out that if i shifted manualy i did not get these over heat messages. but my lap times were 1-5 seconds slower depending if i happend to be in the right gears all while trying to hit breaking points apexes exits etc .. s-sport auto = you being a pro-ish driver! lol when all you have to do is hit your points perfectly and let the car do everything else.. it's a huge advantage.
Me about to pass vette he had just been blue flaged to let me by.

next picture is the breaking zone for turn one. i had just passed the cone.. you can see my front end squatted.. this car feels great under hard breaking no squirly bits just solid breaking even with regular break lines. ps the stock tires have great grip but they wont last long. mine were gone after 4 road course events 8 auto x @ 6300km total.

I would suggest you to read this recent thread and post #6

I like the Subaru AWD system, but it isn't, necessarily, better than Mitsubishi's. Subaru's benefits from its simplicity (the primary benefit is weight reduction and slightly less power loss). Mitsu's is more technologically advanced, robust, and seems to prove itself better in performance situations.
And don't let the overheat message stop you.
Kind of jumping the gun here but what are some basic good starting mods one should take to get close to 350whp? I wont be afraid of modding since I take it the motors are wayyy stronger than my EJ257. Hence why I chose to just stay at Stage 1.
Thats good to hear even the MR's tranny will be safe even @ 400whp. Now its just a deciding factor on which tranny and/or options I like better?

Well, I know for a fact that they are lighter. As for efficiency, the theory with the Subaru's drive train is, since it has fewer bends (and is not transverse layout like the EVO), will lose less power. I'm not sure how true that actually is.
A couple of things I will miss with the STi is the fit and finish of the interior and shifter feel. Not that the STi shifter feels great, the Evo shifter is just subpar.
But the Evo certainly makes up for it with the steering feel and supportive seats.

That's ridiculous! I'd be sh**ing my pants too if that was my first time n I was out there with Z06's, CTS-Vs etc.. So the MR must be a beast on the track with the SST tranny huh?
What mods did you have?

You're right I wished ours came with stock Recaros too. If you want to improve on shifter feel, last year I purchased a TWM short shifter, M1 Abrams knob and TIC Holy Shift kit. Man does it feel 100x better. Much more precise, crisp and notchy in a good way. No more slop with the poly bushings.
So to all the MR owners, how does the auto work? What are the different modes? Will there be one where I can do all the shifting myself via paddles without the granny doing an automatic shift for me?
