Plastic vent behind front wheels
Plastic vent behind front wheels
I've owned a 2003 Evo VIII (Blue By You) and a 2006 Evo IX MR (Graphite Gray), but I sold the last Evo and bought my current GSX to save some cash. I've been thinking about getting an Evo X for a while now, but those plastic vents behind the front wheel just look so cheap to me. At first glance I thought they were just for looks and didn't actually do anything.
I searched around on this forum but I wasn't able to find much info on them. They look like vents to channel air away from the front rotors for cooling but that's just a guess. What are they called? Are there any modifications out there to improve the way they look? It probably won't stop me from eventually buying a 2012 Evo X anyway, but there has to be something out there to make them look better.
Thanks!

Yes, they are called fender vents and they are completely functional. Apparently they are there to release exhaust heat:

If you don't like them you can always get a Ralliart.

The engine hood air outlet and fender vents effectively exhaust heat from the engine compartment. Together with the engine hood air scoop that supplies cooling air to the turbocharger these elements give vivid accent to Evolution X's exterior looks.
not sure if he is talking about the vents... I think he is talking about the fender LINER. Both the vents and the liner are FUNCTIONAL. They might look cheap but once you get yourself an eibach pro kit or whatever and lower it 1.2 inch and what not you wont even notice it
Nope, he's definitely talking about the plastic vents directly behind the front wheels. Yup, they looked cheap as heck to me back in 2007/2008 when the Evo X was first released.
You can buy the carbon fiber versions if you want it to look less cheap or get them color matched. The stock exhaust looks cheap too and looks like it's going to fall off, as if hanging by a thread.

Yep, I meant the fender vents. I know they're functional, I just meant they look cheap and fake. I looked at the aftermarket carbon fiber inserts and they look fairly good, I'll probably be getting those first thing. I went down to the Mitsu dealer today and checked out the 2012s, I'll definitely be getting one, just trying to decide on my color now. Thanks for the input guys.
They are functional but many don't know how. What they actually do is release the air pressure from the engine bay, releasing drag and exhausting heat. Because the fender on the Evo X does not mount flat against the apron (where the upper portion of the fender mounts near the hood), air can be trapped behind the fenders. The vents allow the air to be released.
