Should you purchase an Evo?

Not sure if this is the right place for this but after owning my 2012 Evo GSR for a month now I thought I would give my impression of the car so that maybe it will help another NOOB make their decision. First a little history. I'm 42 and have owned and or driven many types of cars. I have owned 3 and 5 series BMW's, just about every type of 60's VW, 3 different Land Rovers, a Yamaha FZR, 2 different year Kawi ZX7's and a Ducati 996 (not cars I know) In the last 5 years of dating my fiancé she has owned (which basically means I have driven a lot) a Lexus IS and GS, Mercedes ML, Porsche Boxter and Boxter S, Porsche Carrera 4s, BMW 550 and 128. (yea my fiancé goes through a car a year it seems). My ex roommate let me drive many times his sl500 Mercedes and new model Porsche turbo. The reason I list these is not an attempt to show off if anybody was to take it that way, but instead to show what the EVO was up against. I also never owned a Japanese car. Just the three motorcycles because I stereotyped Japanese cars as reliable yet BORING cars with no soul. I'm the type that would take less reliable wih soul.

Ok so if you are still awake I will get to the point. With the exception of my ex roommates Porsche Turbo, the Evo is the most amazing car I have driven. By a long shot. It is no exaggeration to say the car makes you feel like superman. It inspires a confidence that no other car I have driven inspires. Canyon roads at speed seem almost as if you are taking a Sunday cruise. The Evo has completely altered how I view Japanese cars. The power, the sound, the ride are simply amazing. And the car is bone stock. I could only imagine what it will be like after I save a few grand to do some suspension and engine mods. It's like I am 17 again getting my very first car. I can't wait for morning to go to work just so I can drive. The bang for the buck on this car is out of this world. It is worth every penny I paid for it. This car, in my opinion has tons of soul and character. It inspires so much confidence in my driving ability that it may be dangerous as I almost feel there is no limit to what the car can do, but we all know there is always a limit. I am just no where near that limit yet.

And to add the icing to the cake, the Evo comes with this group. Other Evo owners that answer your questions almost the second you press the send button.

Anyways, hope this wasn't too long and drawn out for people to read through. Just figured I would write a bit about my impressions of the car. Please try to ignore any spelling errors. Doing this on my iPad and sometimes words don't go as planned on apple devices.

It is an amazing car, and glad you are enjoying it. My family has had Mitsus for years and its amazing that they have gems like the Evo, the Eclipse GSX, the Galant VR-4, 3000GT VR-4, Montero Evolution (V6 TT AWD), the Galant VR-4 that was also a V6 turbo awd...etc...yet the majority of cars they bring to the US scream "rental."

What's also funny is that both you and I got our 2012 around the same time and have similar tastes in Exhaust and Springs. I will take my time modding it so I will read your posts and see your pictures so I can live vicariously through your car.

soon enough, you'll get used to the power. then the mod bug will climb out the car and attack you until you feed it performance goodies and small children. SMALL CHILDREN!!!

In other words, glad to have ya as a fellow evo owner

+1.

Congrats on your purchase. The Evo is definitely an amazing machine.

But you will get use to the power eventually and be in the hunt for more.. And it only gets more fun after that. I would say the only downside to the Evo is many people end up getting addicted to modding and spend more money than they should. Hahaha

Glad you love your Evo as much as I love mine lol!

Even after I'm making the money to buy Porsche Turbos, Audis R8s and GT-Rs, I'll still have my Evo by my side!

I want that soft padding you have on your door though... :\ wanna trade for my 2011 plastic door trims? lol!!!

That's not necessarily true. I've owned two Evos, both of which had always remained stock, such as the IX SE I bought brand new. More than five years after buying it, it's still bone stock.

The trick is to just not drive it like a madman whenever the engine is on. When I commute, I drive it like a regular car. But when an opportunity presents itself, then I have fun with it. Frankly there are even moments where I forget how fast the car is in stock form, just because I dont wring the car out all the time, and it's great. Yet I've still ridden in other cars over recent years, including my boss's 2011 550i (twin turbo 400 hp V-8), s client's 2009 C63 AMG (450 hp V-8) and an acquaintance's Ferrari F430 16M Scuderia (510 hp V-8), so it's not as if I'm only accustomed to an Evo's acceleration.

Yea, I know that feeling. I had those motorcycles with INSANE 0-60 speeds and after a few months they didn't seem fast anymore. There is no limit to speed. Although, I may be happy with a F1 car.

I personally don't drive it like a madman, yet. I haven't even taken it to redline yet. But I do "get on it" every once in awhile. My weakness is turns. On ramps and canyon roads it's impossible to resist seeing how fast I can take them. Maybe I should print an invoice for the cost of new tires and hang it in the car to remind myself how much it is costing me to take turns at speed.

You're going to feel even weaker the moment you see the edges of your tires vanish... Yes, I do get off the exit on Tpike at 60mph almost ALL the time... yes, I need new tires asap!...

One month I think you are still in the honeymoon phase. The real test if the Evo is in your blood is 2-3 years ownership, especially out of warranty. I've got one year down so far and I'm still loving every minute of it.

True, but don't forget I am a fan of Land Rover and have owned 3 out of warranty. Anybody that keeps a Rover past the warranty obviously has family jewels made of steel.
