To Mod or not to Mod....
To Mod or not to Mod....
Ok folks....my question is as basic as the title suggests.
I have a 2010 PB X with 6200 miles on it and I'm tossing around the idea of modding the car. I was thinking about an intercooler kit, intake, turboback, gauges, ebc, sparkplug change and tranny flush.
I want honest opinions from those who have similar mods. Is it truly worth it? Do you feel that the power increase with those mods plus a tune makes driving the Evo more fun? Everything mentioned will cost a little over 6 grand do to(purchase plus installation and tune)...I have the cash to do it, but I guess old age and maturity has me questioning my decisons (all, not just this) before pulling the trigger.
Thanks!

Do it. I ran a Cobb Access Port shelf map until 60k miles to stay warranty compliant and then added the mods in my sig. Wish now that I had not waited so long.
BIG difference in fun to drive factor.
Your spark plugs are fine, change them when the manual says to. Also I would avoid ebc, if you mean a stand alone aftermarket boost control. Just add a 3port boost control solenoid.
As for parts, can't go wrong with ETS, I would get their intake, Intercooler and piping, and whichever of their exhausts will suit you.
Drivetrain fluid replacement is never a bad idea.
Enjoy!

Thanks dude! I really appreciate the response. I was planning on the following:
ETS Short Ram
Grimspeed 3 Port EBC
Mil.Spec 100 Cell High Flow Cat
Map O2 DP/3d Flange/Ceramic coating
ETS Intercooler Kit with UICP/LICP
Either ETS V2 or Invidia Q300 Exhaust
Redline Tranny Cocktail
Aem UEGO/Tru-Boost gauges
AMI dual gauge pod
Why a solenoid and not a EBC? Forgive my ignorance, but I am new to the modding scene.

The Grimmsport 3-port is what I was talking about, it gives better fine boost control, but the ECU is still "in charge". I thought you may be talking about some kind of stand alone system.
Your parts list looks tight, you should have about 100 whp above stock, and the responsiveness will blow your mind. I have 21,000 miles on my setup and I still
every time I get behind the wheel!

How is all that adding up to $6k? That seems kinda high for that list, even installed.

Believe you me brother...I thought it was a bit expensive as well, hence the hesitation in going forward with it. But at the end of the day, I'm about as mechanically inclined as a spider monkey on Xanax.. I'd rather pay the money to those who do this professionally and successfully than ask a friend with one light in his garage and a bunch of hand tools to "help me out".
In my opinion, here is what you need....
Mil.Spec 100 Cell High Flow Cat
Map O2 DP/3d Flange/Ceramic coating
Either ETS V2 or Invidia Q300 Exhaust
ETS UICP
Aem UEGO/Tru-Boost gauges
AMI dual gauge pod
The above parts will get you an 80whp gain over stock. These are the best bang for your buck mods you can do. All you really need for the stock turbo and will still maintain stock driveability.
These other parts will get you another 20whp for roughly $2,000 with labor. Is it worth it? That's up to you.
ETS Short Ram
Grimspeed 3 Port EBC - not really going to do much for you. Stock boost control is pretty good.
ETS Intercooler Kit with /LICP
Redline Tranny Cocktail - not needed right now. waiting until you get over 20,000-25,000 miles

Thanks Stein. That's definitely something to think about. I figured I'd do all the parts listed in an attempt to curb the itch to do more in the forseeable future. Also, I'm not so sure I'll be able to sell my wife on buying more parts down the road when we have a 5 month old son and will be looking for a house to purchase. She has always been very supportive, but my son makes her think and do crazy things as of late. Eventually I think I'll be lucky to get away with cosmetic mods, like my low wing, which I want to burn off the car.....
Thanks VR!
Thanks VR!
UPDATE: Stein, I took your advice. Thanks again for the advice! I agree, an additional 20 hp was not worth the extra investment.
Purchased the following:
ETS V2 Exhaust
Mil Spec 100 Cell Highflow Cat TP
Map O2 DP with 3d/Ceramic
K&N Typhoon Intake w/UICP
AMI Customs 3 gauge A Pillar Pod
Grimspeed 3 Port (for 105 bucks, I didn't want to pass it up)
Works short throw shifter (new to the list...instead of getting the Intercooler/LICP)
Works Hybrid Shifter Cable Bushings
Works Shifter Console Bushings
Prosport "Evo" Series Wideband, Boost and Oil Pressure Gauges
Torque Solutions Billet Aluminum Front Engine Mount (also new to the list)
Pocketed around $900 on the parts alone by going this route. I think this will be good enough to hold me over for a long time to come.
Again, I truly appreciate the feedback from everyone!
Mike
