I want a temporary exhaust, will this work ?
I want a temporary exhaust, will this work ?
I will try and make this short.
I have a 2011 evo gsr with the following mods:
Ets intake
Ets upper & lower ic pipes
Cobb down pipe
Cobb high flow cat
Cobb access port
Ivey tune
These are the only mods i wanted to do to my car, nothing more ever.
Reason is that i use it as daily drive and for family and need it to be quiet and feel stock, but with the extra fun.
So i was thinking since i have the cobb ac port why not go to a cheap muffler shop and do a 3" straight pipe from cat back and go back to ivey and do a seperrate tune on the port to be used with C16 fuel only when i go to the track which i dont go more then 4 times a year. You might say why go to the trouble and just get a cat back, but i dont want to due to theres no such thing as quiet as stock and i cant have that and my friend has a shop i could swap it any time i want.
Now the other question i need help is, should i do a straight pipe from cat back or get the extra hp and do it from down pipe. Then i was thinking id rather do it from cat back due to on the high flow cat i have like to bungs on it the stock exhaust sensor and a air fuel gauge to it and that would be extra work each time swap it.
So what you guys think.
Oh one more question, should i just do a turn down pipe from the cat or just stick with the straight pipe and exit to the back.

Look into the Works Stealthworks axleback. It's a stock exhaust that has been modified and is pretty quiet. Oh and Works warranties their parts.

Yes i know about that but i want to track it and want to get the most out of it with no restriction whats so ever and as i heard from a few people the stockk 11 & 12 exhaust flows better then the 08 & 10 so the works wont do it for me thats preety much line my stock now.
I could get the 3" straight pipe done for $130 bucks with flange on for easy swaps and rock it at the track then switch from race tune to regular tune when i have the stock cat back. Best of bost worlds, quiet daily, loud as hell at the track.

I personally like the WORKS modified muffler idea above, swapping catbacks sounds like a PITA, and I really doubt you'd be giving up much power on such a basic setup. You could go a setup beyond and get a 3" mid-pipe to go from the HFC to the modified stock muffler.
Works is out of the list.
I will try this first and let you guys know.
Thanks for all your help
Agreed. You don't want to have to switch cat-backs all the time.
why not make a dump pipe instead since you don't care if it's loud when tracking. you'll just take off the lid when you want to dump before the cat. get the best of both worlds and not have to bolt on and bolt off the whole thing.

I know plenty of guys who run the Works system and they love it. The entire system is modular and easily swaps with stock pieces. It also includes a factory matched warranty. *shrug* it's your money.
I have some experience with this...
Periodically we race at Lime Rock Park race track which has a noise restriction in place at 86 db (at 50 feet). They test the cars every time. Really. And if you fail they will flag you off the track. An Evo X stock exhaust with basic bolt on mods, for example, is too loud at WOT on the straight no kidding. A Porsche Boxster, Nissan 350Z, and Subaru STi with stock exhaust are also too loud at WOT when combined with basic intake mods.
For comparison, we run an AMS DP and are catless and our first AMS single exit muffled exhaust came in at 96db at WOT. I can't imagine what our normal straight through exhaust comes in at...LOUD.
To race at LRP, we bought a used Ultimate Racing dual exhaust. It uses two small mufflers. A local racing exhaust shop then installed a Magnaflow resonator and two tips that turn down at exit. It is not particularly pretty. Tuning indicates we lose a few HP and it is much heavier than our normal exhaust.
Most importantly, it is VERY quiet. In fact, it is much quieter than stock when actually driving the car and does comply with the track requirements. I think the exhaust cost us $250 used and the reworking cost another $400. We need to swap it out easily so had to match its mid pipe length to the other exhaust.
