So whats the deal with this car ?? I want the truth

Hey everyone,

I currently drive a 2006 mazda rx8. I love the car but its been giving me nothing but problems lately and to be honest the power doesnt cut it for me anymore. I have my eyes set on an evo x as my next car. Im truly obssessed and intrigued with this car and its ability to make crazy amounts of power. I am on a student budget so il have to live with the rx8 till next year so i can save up for the X.

My buddy just sold his evo x and has been telling me not to get one and that the engine gets blown pretty easy. I live in toronto and from what ive been reading there arent many good evo x tuners around my area except for maybe magnus (read mixed reviews).

I only plan on getting some bolt ons and a mild tune. I dont want anything crazy. My goal is probably a 400whp daily driver. My question is .. i know this is achievable but is it reliable ??

I want my next car to not give me headaches like my rx8 is right now. Everytime i drive this car... i drive in fear of it not startinng and breaking down (it has a few days ago when the battery died)

Any input will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks Ken

totally possible. My car makes ~600whp dynojet and I drive it every day. Study study study other people's setups and spend your money wisely, be on top of maintenance and you'll be in great shape.

thanks !!! this gives me hope

I dont know why he said not to get one and the motor gets blown easily. I guess cause there arent many good local tuners around here.

But thanks for reassuring me. Im obssessed with this beast and i look at pictures of it everyday and sigh LOL

To get 400hp you will need a fp green or other turbo of the same size. I had a FP Red, made 431hp and my tuner blew my motor up. 20k on the motor and its gone. The 4b11t is a good engine but you need to find a tuner that knows his ****.

i think ive read before that someone made 400whp on stock turbo. My ultimate goal is to get the most HP out of the stock turbo without blowing it of course lol.

It's possbile, just depends on how "stock" you want to stay and how safe and reliable you want to go. It's a great light-weight engine, just has to be built up the right way. Pushing it to 400 HP isn't gonna be a problem though. e85 takes care of detonation issues. But that does take some setup and a good tuner as stated above. It's a great car and it drives great around turns. It's also very safe. And IMO it's got a very aggressive look without the price tag of a GTR.

GL with your decision =)

Snakes709 did you have to end up paying for the blown engine or did you make your tuner pay for it since he blew it? Just. Curious

Have you test driven one? That's really the make or break for most people. Spooling isn't as big of an issue as with the 8 or 9. And if you like the new idea of the paddle shifting then you'll love the MR. I'd get it if I wasn't going to race it....I just don't feel that racing is the same if you don't shift that stick.

haha I'm right there with ya. Go test drive one. I'm pretty sure that once you feel that turbo spool up and kick in you'll be hooked. I'm still hooked. Did my first autoX event and it was just too much fun....I was going faster then I as used to having to think, my old autox car was a 240sx...non-turbo. Plus AWD is a totally different animal to race. I still haven't quite gotten the hang of it but it was fun none the less and that's what it's all about. I can't wait to test it on the track at buttonwillow, that's gonna be awesome =)

That's weird because I've driven a couple of X's (also owned 1) and they all felt more laggy to me than most 8's or 9's I've driven that were stock turbo.

Boosted sin, the reason ur friend says the engine blows easily is coz its all aluminum block. Yes, it's easy to make power, but u gotta have the right tuner to tune it. 400whp is within reach if u go e85. There's thing u have to change though, first, clutch. Though stock clutch is made by exedy, the clamping power isn't as good with aftermarket clutches.

Either way, treat ur car good and it will treat u good as well. And that's true to any car...it's just that evo is more fun.

You should start lurking in the Dyno result/build forums and see for yourself!

And for your 400whp goal, I can tell you that once you start going fast, you will want to go faster, lol.
