Question Odd starting condition

So this morning it's like 68°f out and went to start car. Cranked for a few seconds and car didn't start. 2nd attempt same result. 3 attempt- fires right up. Any one else had this condition. I'm stumped. First time it's happened. Car is completely stock as of right now and all service and maintenance has been performed. I'm just over 50k on odometer and night before I took a short hour ride. Nothing crazy. Topped gas off and parked as usual. I'm stumped. I'll have an update later as to if this issue occurs again.

I'd check the plugs out an see what shape they are in.......Only do this when the engine is cold aluminum head when hot an trying to change the plugs is a no no

Owned my Evo maybe 6 weeks, no problems.

Then about week 7 I had about 3 starts where it would crank and engine came to life but then dipped down to maybe a few hundred RPMs, too low to really say - it kind of sputtered and revived itself to steady idle just above 1K. Drove fine.

Next day it stalled itself out first attempt but immediate next attempt started up fine. Drove fine.

Since then I have had nothing but good start ups........fluke? temp?

Same gas, same station since I bought the car.
File it under Evo-Magic I guess?

I just made a post similar to this but only have 3000 miles on mine. No real answer in my post yet other than its normal, of course. At some point I'll get it to the dealer but I really hate them and wont go unless I absoultely have to.

Is it something related to the immobiliser function? The immobiliser disables the ECU outputs so the engine will crank over but will never start. I wonder if it simply wasn't detecting the key FOB those first 2 times you tried to start it.

Well well well, wouldnt you know it.. just got my hair cut, went to the car, crank crank crank...no start... second attempt cranked, and slowly fired up. its been starting fine since.
Must be a virus going around getting all our cars sick or something.

I'm going with this option. Somehow the car didn't see key after I unlocked the tumbler. When my fob and iPhone are in same pocket car says "no key"

Maybe a controlled experiment we could all try.

Its just natural for this engine from my experience. It's happened to me quite a few times, usually when I'm at an AutoX i get the really low dip in rpm. (fpr hose came off the other week and caused it too but way worse)

Also, never keep your FOB and phone in the same pocket at least with the older X. I have erased 2 FOBs like that and the buttons stop working. Supposedly the newer ones don't have that issue.

In my case however I just have the normal key, so that can't be the issue.

For me it also did not display the KEY MISSING text so I have to believe it saw the key.

Slightly off topic but possibly related in terms of missing key/start errors via immobilizer ....

Whenever the key is in the same pocket as my iPhone (4 prior - 5 now) it will not find the key. It wont let me unlock from the outside or start the car. Apparently the iPhone blocks or jams the key when they are next to each other i.e. in same pocket or cup holder etc.

Never saw anyone talk about that in any other starting/key missing thread and maybe some of you clip your keys on the outside of your phone pocket or carry it in the pocket with your phone and this helps your starting/key errors situations?

It's common sense really. I key fob with a low power radio frequency sitting under or next to a phone with a high power radio frequency... guess what... the more powerful radio wins! :-)

This happened to me last week (not the first time though). I got in the car and cranked it for what felt like 5-7 seconds and as soon as I decided to let it go it fired right up. It usually takes 1-2 seconds to start up. I have 8900 miles on the odo and i hang my key fob on my pants and my droid phone was in the passenger seat. I didn't think too much of it and it seems like from the other posts this is common with the X.

Is it possible the engine gets flooded somehow during shut down causing it to be hard to start next time around? When this happens again I'll hold the pedal to the floor, see if it'll start up a bit faster. Posted from Evolutionm.net App for Android

Update: 99eclipsegsx, you was on target with immobilizer function causing issue. My iphone was blocking the signal from the pass key intermittently. So even tho wasn't seeing a key not detected in the HUD that's what caused the no start. Moved to cell phone to ther pocket on pants and no problem. Cell phone in same pocket and 6 out of 10 tries to enter via touch handle, or turn tumbler was not successful. 4 out of 10 tries with tumbler not locked but turned resulted in cranking but a no start condition. A buddy of mine also recommended changing battery in fob as it may be weak too.
