internal short causing p0131

Has anyone had this problem? I'm actually having trouble passing smog and just replaced this sensor since I remembered the last time I went to a dealership they told me I had this code but I only saw a code for the bad maf sensor when I used my scanner so I thought maybe they werwe're trying to rip me off. I replaced the maf sensor back in 2011 but never bothered with the o2 sensor. I checked the front o2 sensor and it looked fauled so I replaced it since I was advised it could cause the car to run rich. I am failing smog due to high hc levels. Now my concern is with the internal short causing low voltage readings on the o2 sensor. How do I check for internal shorts and where do I start?

what do you mean it "looked failed"? Sounds to me like your catalytic converter is dead, or you've got some mods causing you trouble.

What have you done to the car, is it tuned, if so, who tuned it?

You will need to get a more advanced diagnostics computer and watch the o2's to see if they are switching. A bad cat could cause that, but I highly doubt it. Are you replacing the 02 with a factory unit. A lot of aftermarket 02's can cause issues.

Also if you have a exhaust manifold leak that could throw off a front o2 code with unmetered air.

edit: "unmetered air" usually refers to the MAF, not the front O2 sensor, but we get the idea - Iowa999
