it all comes down to how deep your wallet is, and how much you want to learn.

The 8's will be very similar to what you're used to
The 9's are similar, with the addition of MIVEC, which is a lot like VTEC
The X is completely different. All your mods have to be computer adjusted or you will have failures. I would say they are still heavily responsive to mods, but you will spend more money and more time making one crazy fast, compared to an 8 or 9.

Objectively, you will build a faster car for less money with an Evo 8. The 9 adds some creature comforts and variable valve timing. The X is a pretty acute departure from the previous Evo's really. Don't get me wrong, I've owned 3, and just bought a new 2013. They are significantly more refined, but they are not quite the raw power insanity that an 8 is.

Thats wrong. Mivec and vtec are insanely different. Maybe not in.basic theory but in application and the way both vvt systems behave soundwise and how dramatic the crossover is. I owned a civic si before my evo. Im not slamming the guy who said that by the way just trying to.explain that vtec is much more noticable.

I just meant in the tradition sense of oil-pressure activated variable valve timing

9 is a nice mix of traditional rally destroyer 8/9 with a smoother interior on some like the MR's.
