crack windshielf

I have a 2013 GSR with only 4500 miles on it and I now have an 8 inch crack in my windshield. I was wondering if anyone had an idea how much a new one cost and if anyone had any experience with safelight. I got a quote from them to fix it for $129 but I want a new windshield since the crack is right in my line of sight. So anyone use them for fixes or windshield replacement. Are they good?

By law, they're not allowed to repair a windshield with a crack in the driver's line of vision, it must be replaced.

Don't you have insurance with glass coverage? Only use OEM glass if you can help it since it is different from what these glass companies will sell you. Some states, such as Texas, give you the right to request your insurance use only OEM parts.

I'd probably just call my insurance agent then go to the dealer and have them do it.

I just called the glass company that my shop use here in Northeast Ohio and they quoted me $150 for a windshield or $250 for a windshield with the rain sensor, which I don't recall any evo's having auto wipers. Hope that gives you some type of idea. I would stay away from windshield companies such as safelight, they are extremely expensive.

Yes but I have a $500 deductible and I'm sure its not going to cost more then that and I do not want to claim it because then my insurance will go up.

As an insurance agent, I would not recommend filing a claim for the windshield.

One thing I miss about my Minnesota auto insurance policy is the $0 deductible glass coverage

Please let me know what insurance company you work for so that I may never get insurance through you. Thanks

A windshield is a Comp Claim on your insurance no insurance company should EVER raise your rates for a Comp claim (maybe if you filed 4 a year or something stupid)

I'm guessing the younger folks is who this pertains to as they would have the higher comp deductibles. Most folks as they get older lower this deductible. ie. mine is 50 bucks

So a deer jumps in front of me, broken windshield, car broken into (Yes I've filed comp claims for all those instances) It's a $50 fix.

And no my insurance rate has never increased. Hell my evo alone has been through 3 windshields all replaced by insurance. That's what its there for

I am not referring to a price jump, I am referring to the claim being on the record. Once you file a claim it is on your record for 3 years, even if it was a $50 comp claim it will still show up. When you shop around for insurance (to lower your payments or anything else), we run a MVR (motor vehicle report) which will show all the claims that have been filed. Companies look at this and basically decide if the "risk" is acceptable. By all means if you are planning on staying with your current insurer forever, go file a claim.

Excuse me for trying to help the guy out, no need to jump down people's throats on the forums.

This is true, it is just like shopping for homeowners insurance, if you file too many claims with your homeowners insurance it is on your record, doesn't matter if it was act of god, natural disaster, etc. The insurance company just sees it that you have filed a lot of claims and a lot of place will pretty much deem you uninsurable do to all your claims. Then you're stuck paying higher premiums for companies that offer insurance to people with "bad records."

The windshield is going to be cheaper than the deductible so may as well just pay out of pocket.

This is indeed a professional insight. You bring up a good point that insurance claims stay on your record for 3 years.

Further, I wonder if collision and comprehensive coverage is really a good investment. Do you think that having these two coverage options actually means paying more than having none and paying yourself, when something happens?

For OP's case, I also suspect that zanelefko could be right. Filing a claim for the windshield may, in fact, cost more than paying out of your own pocket.

Correct. You live in one of the few states that requires zero deductible on wind-shield replacement.
