Post Looking to mod my evo

pick up my ww exo x last 2 weeks already wanting to mod my evo now haha. I'm not sure where to start as I only been modding hondas before. I don't know which brand or type of Intake and Exhaust I want that would better suit for the Evo. For exhaust tbe or cbe? Whats the difference between the two? I need it street smog legal as ca smog sucks!! Can anyone enlighten me. Need price range or where a good shop to purchase would also help! TIA. If I install intake and exhaust would I need it tune or it can wait and car still be fine?

There's lots of choices and many good ones. As long as you stick to reputable vendors, you should be fine. Do some searching around the forums and you can find reviews and discussions on pretty much every part by every manufacturer.

As for the California smog, you do realize that you aren't required to smog new vehicles for 6 years after initial registration, right? So, while some mods still technically aren't legal, you shouldn't have to worry about that for some time yet.

Personally, I'm running pretty much all ETS parts. Very reasonable prices and great quality.

As far as tuning goes, wait until you get all the parts you want, then install and immediately get a tune. You don't want to blow up your $35k car because you didn't want to shell out $500 for a tune, right?

Thanks for smog info. But yeh just dont want it to be a hassle 6 years later. So both you guys running ets. sure u guys did research on ams. What made you guys pick ets over ams? how does ets compare to ams? Btw what's the difference between tbe and cbe? Also can I slap on parts right away and drive for awhile before getting tune ? Like intake, exhaust, bov. Then get it tune later will still be safe? Appreciate u guys help so far.

AMS is a great company and they make quality parts. I happened to be able to get in on a group buy for ETS, which discounted their already good prices, so that sweetened the deal.

As far as installing parts without a tune, it's not usually a good idea. Can you do it? Sure. Should you do it? No, not for long, anyway.

Like I said before, save all your parts and do the install immediately prior to getting a tune. Better safe than sorry.

If you mess with the intake, then, yes, get a tune, because most intakes read air-flow slightly different from stock.

But a cat-back doesn't need a tune (mostly because the main restriction in the exhaust is the cat, so the car is mostly going to be louder, instead of much faster).

Get the ETS Intake, they stated you don't need a tune because they use the same MAF. My friend installed that intake and didn't get tuned and he's been fine no check engine lights.

Can anyone else confirm if ets intake don't need a tune? Btw, I'm confused i been modding Hondas before we can slap on parts and all we do just reset ecu and let it learn itself and driving is fine until tune. For evo we can't do the same? Sorry if dumb question still learning this new turbo car. Thanks!

As far as ETS goes, since they use the stock MAF housing on the intake, you technically do not need a tune. Will it benefit you to get one? Yes. You can still run in to problems if you don't get one. I chose ETS due to recommendations from friends, and the fact that they are significantly cheaper than AMS.

Both are reputable brands, with excellent customer service. Even with the few small issues I had with my ETS gear, I would still recommend them if you are lookign for quality products for a little less money.

Sometimes you can get a check engine light when you put on an intake. It could be something that was done wrong during the installation, or it could just be due to the increased air flow. It usually goes off after being driven a bit. You can also reset the ECU, and chances are you'll be fine.

If you do look at the AMS intake, note that it does not use the stock MAF housing, so it does require a tune.

Cobb tuning makes the accessport with preloaded maps on it for different modifications. Although you can run the ETS intake without the tune, I would suggest buying the accessport to maximize its performance.

Also, I would suggest looking into power packages from different manufacturers. You'll hear a lot of great things from ETS and AMS. I find ETS and AMS to be similar in quality but ETS is far better priced. I have all ETS parts and couldnt be more satisified with the quality, price and customer service.

(Please note, I am not a mechanic nor claim to be an expert. All comments in my posts are clearly an opinion and nothing more)

I just bought my first evo and like you I"m super excited to start modding. I guess I wouldn't call it a mod but the first thing I plan on purchasing is a wideband and tactrix cable lol. I want to understand how the car drives and behaves while its stock before I mod it.

You will get further by reading as much as you can rather than looking at random numbers. Google is your friend. The computers on these cars are extremely complicated.
