Mitsubishi to cease production of Lancer Evolution X

Have you seen the new Saab? Its not a dishwasher.
Have you seen the new Saab? Its not a dishwasher.
("Megane" is also Japanese slang for "four eyes".
) So the next Lancer will be the "nerdmobile"?
The experimental hybrid that's been rumored to be the next "EVO" will be a separate platform, so the term "Lancer Evolution" won't fit, and may be dropped.
Besides: the notion of AWD by internal combustion on one end and electric on the other is a concept that does not produce handling balance that might in any way be called "sporty".
Certainly nothing that would approach the AWC of the X.
So again, not an "evolution" so much as a devolution.
A less sporty but more expensive alternative to the EVO X is the Volvo S60R.
Volvo has also jumped on the "political correctness" bandwagon with the V60 "plug-in hybrid" -- for Europe only.
At the equivalent of $64K and with an electric range of 31 miles, I expect sales to be sluggish, except among those Europeans biased against Japanese cars.
Besides: those who "buy green" want to be *seen* to buy green, so hybrids that look like conventional cars don't sell well.
But the whole "hybrid" nonsense is like all things "politically correct": Not "correct" by any other metric.
Electricity is not a power source. It's merely a power transfer medium.
Electric cars are just coal fired engines that move the exhaust pipe to the generating plant.
Another example of "green" cities just exporting their pollution as they import their energy.
Australia was threatening to sue FIM over the new "hybrid" F1 cars ... that sound like weed-whackers.
They feel that the promise of the "pinnacle of motorsports" has been breached.
I expected the death (or crippling) of the EVO, when I heard about that nonsense split power system.
One reason I upgraded to a 2014 X even though the 2003 VIII was still running perfectly was because the only reasonable alternatives to the X cost at least twice as much: the GTR or the 911S4.
Even if they do put the rumored "EVO XI" into production, I wouldn't touch one with a 20 foot Scandinavian, must less a ten foot pole.

A pity Porsche doesn't make an AWD version of the Cayman (where they *finally* learned to put the engine *between* the axles
). (Basically a hard-top Boxter.)
But they also de-tune the engines on the cheaper Cayman, to keep it from out-running it's more expensive big brother.

One surprise was how frantic the Mitsu dealer was for me to come pick up my MR, and get it out of their showroom, once it arrived. (I ordered it back in August and it arrived in December.)
Apparently, the EVO makes the rest of their product line look bad.

(Which may be the real reason for Mitsu to drop the EVO.)
I'm sorry but I struggled to find one piece of non biased piece of info in that......
Gas/hybrid not "sporty"?! I guess maclaren and Porsche screwed them selves with the P1 and the 918....
The next Evo is moving into the future.... New technology becoming bigger and better at what it does best *ahem* "EVOLVING"
Just because done people don't understand or don't like the way it's going, "waaaaah" bring back the Evo lX"
Everyone is scared of diesel as they just don't know about it, nor care to research....
Take the bmw 335i and the 335d
The diesel variant smashes on it's gas counter part.... But people don't know that and probably won't believe my statement until they google it
Just embrace the future....
be excited for what is to come

DGS has good points for the majority of his info but I have to agree with Dave, you should embrace new technology and the new split drive system electric system. One thing is I just hope when they do this that it is RWD engine control(FR) and the front is electric driven. I just have a feeling that it wont be and it'll be FWD biased and rear electric driven.
Because this would be due to too much weight up front with the drivetrain already being there. Mclaren, NSX, etc have the engines in the mid/rear and so the front electric drive system are just more practical in the front where as it wouldn't be for the Megane/Evo.
Also you forgot about the Golf R which is all around better and cheaper than a S60R, as far as Evo replacement.

"The Lancer Evolution was created when engineers from Mitsubishi's rally program shoehorned the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and all-wheel-drive system from the Galant VR-4 into a compact Lancer model."
What a happy experiment that was! At least there is a community that will be devoted to the Evo line for many years to come.
