Tarmac and Brake light flashing... rubber burning smell

Something is wrong with my Evo

recently I put on my turbo back exhaust. no other performance mods. Used an Cobb AP low waste gate map (turbo back + no other mods map).

everything else is fine.. but when i step on the gas, (mostly during 1st gear), my Tarmac light comes on for a second along with my brake lights.. and a ding sound.. it doesn't appear as often in higher rpm/gears, mostly during 1st gear..

today, same thing happened and this terrible rubber smell came out.. smells like a hard clutch burn but i wasn't touching my clutch.. it happened when RPM suddenly jumped to red line and bounced back. (did not actually hit red line)

anyone know what could be the issue? over boosting?? my car is going in for 90k mile service this weekend.. wondering if it's safe to drive till then.

thanks

Have you ever replace the clutch. Sounds like the clutch is slipping. If the rpm jump and the car is not accelerating at the same pace. Along with the burning smell.

i replaced stock clutch before.. I know the feel when clutch was slipping.. i waited for so long that I could barely get the car into the shop last time.. lol.

this felt different. RPM bounces up and down a little and the car was jerking.. doesn't feel like clutch slip. the smell came after high RPM.. strong smell and disappeared quickly.

beside that, car drives normal. I can drive it normally now if I don't press the gas too hard. If i do, Tarmac + Brake light flashes again

I'm looking at my gauge for boost. when I hit the gas, boost goes from negative to 0... stays at 0 for a few seconds then goes to 1-4 psi.. then I shift.. I don't think that's driving too hard.. but Tarmac will beep. occurs every single time in 1st gear now.. doesn't happen much at all in other gears

Was this happening before you flash with cobb accessport. If not have you try reverting back to stock flash to see if that solves the issue. Could be the map your running. Is the accessport to the lastest firmware.

after the flash. when I took off the exhaust and reflashed to oem tune, problem persisted. people told me to give it time but it never got better. So i put the exhaust back on

at this point i think it's just a crappy oem tune. no one really confirmed it in the tuning section. but today the smell appeared for first time

Is it possible you have a dragging/hot brake? (although it really sounds like a clutch event)

Does it brake in a straight line (no hands on the wheel)? Presuming so, then it's the clutch. The rpm bump certainly seems clutch related.

Have you bled your clutch line? If the brake fluid gets very old, it can cause the clutch to bind. Happened to me and something to check.

brakes fine. straight line no issue. exceedy clutch has been in the car for 3 years. not a single issue.

I will look into the hot brake issue. I did have several master clutch cylinder issues before. switched to SSP CMC which had its own issues. haven't done the recall yet

I never thought it would be brake/clutch related since it comes on mostly during 1st gear while hitting the gas. always thought those lights could mean overboosting. I will make sure to mention this during my 90k service.

Have you checked the ACD fluid? Perhaps something is going wrong there with the electronically controlled clutch.

When you drive gently it doesn't lock up much (apply the clutches) but once you really get on the gas the center diff will lockup harder as forward-G-Forces increase.

Perhaps something is going wrong there. You didn't have anyone put new fluids in anywhere did you? Sometimes people get confused about the extra fluid our cars take (usually in the rear diff with 2 drain plugs). I also know you can't just put any fluid in the t-case.... Diaqueen/Redline or you're going to ruin the t-case gears (death whine). But you're not taking about a death whine.....

Clutch seemed like the issue to me but you seem adamant that it's something else...... Good luck

thanks! i'm open to any suggestions as I have no clue on what it is..

I will make sure to check ACD fluid. I have appointment with a shop to check. If no hardware issue, I will take it to a tuner for a tuning check
