Bogus move by dealer
I would say that the odds of the warranty company approving a pre exhisting condition would be pretty low. But you might as well take it in and make sure they note down on your invoice that the repair would have to be approved or you would not be paying for them to do the job. If anything maybe you would be liable for a diagnostic fee if the claim by the warranty company is denied.. Also have you tried just swapping fluids or putting fresh fluid in the tranny to see if that helps?
They definitely are. It's such a hassle to get anything done
Yea i used to work for one of those companys that sell those warranties all they care about is makeing there sales quota. It was rare when something was actually covered they usually found all kinds of reasons to deny coverage or to just make a partial payment or they sourced out used parts themselves and had mechanics put those in instead.
As a past bmw tech i could tell you that aftermarket warranties have one goal and that is profit. They will/should replace up too 1,000 in a single claim at a time. If the amount is greater they usually send out a adjuster or an inspector and it goes from there. Most work is actually approved
BUT not all parts are oem. Not even aftermarket. Some are junk yard parts. As a customer you should ALWAYS ask where your parts come from. Please note this is pertaining to aftermarket warranties and not all of them. Best warranty to get is factory certified or certified pre owned (cpo), which is an extension of your new car. It may not cover all the parts but trust me it covers plenty of very $$$ ones.

I had a Zurich warranty that I got with my car when I purchased it new. I paid $1700 for a 10 year/100,000 mile plan (I knew that I would reach 100k well before 10 years... I'm at 114k now). The plan more than paid for itself when my AYC pump took a dump. Warranty company sent out an adjuster who was there the next day, no issues, no fuss, dealer had the car ready to go in like 2 days.
Generally I agree that warranties are a waste of money (they obviously are sold for profit so statistically they don't pay for themselves more often than not). That being said, if you act like an adult and know what you are signing / buying when you buy it (perhaps do some research ahead of time), it shouldn't be a big deal to get them to honor it.
You can ALWAYS get a discount on aftermarket an extended warranties.
