Some MR questions
So I've been a member for a while but haven't had an Evo for a few years (had a 2004 Evo VIII that is in my profile pic). I am going to look at a 2012 Evo X MR this Saturday but it will be my first experience with an SST. Car has 20k miles so I know there will be a service coming up soon but not sure what to look for in terms of how the transmission should feel. Should I immediately switch it to S Sport or does normal give you a better feel for if the car is doing anything silly? Any other tips (besides the normal car buying tips) you guys can give me before I dive in? I'm not expecting to come back with the car unless the numbers and payments are right since I'm not in need but I really miss owning an Evo.
Car will be mostly a daily but not planning on modding more than around 350 hp for a bit (yeah right) but I have a beater to use for necessary downtimes (learned that from owning a GSX DSM lol). I know it's hard to give advice without really being there but any things to look for would go a long way.

I have owned 2 SST Evo's... love them. Seem faster than a manual which you have to flog a bit.
As far as how it should feel, make sure the clutch is engaging off the line. Look for excessive slip. I had some slip on the one I own now, but a fluid and filter change fixed it.
I run the trans in whatever mode I feel like normal, sport and occasionally super sport. As long as you don't beat the crap out of it ( all of the time), it will be fine.
Normal or sport should tell you if the trans is working good.

To make sure the car is in ok shape test it on all the driving modes.
Start the test in Normal and Auto. Drive it and let it shift from 1st to 6th, then let it slow down to a stop. The SST should shift on its own back down from 6th then 5th and so on until 1st when you come to a stop without hesitation.
Then put it in Sport mode and repeat the test. It should shift gears around 4K to 4.5K rpms in Sport auto mode. Then let it slow down allowing the car to go from 6th to 5th to 4th and so one until it reaches 1st at a stop. In this Sport Mode the car will rev up as it shiftsdown gears sort of like a standard car.
Then test it in Super Sport Mode in Auto. In this mode you will not be able to test it
all the way to 6th gear. If you do you will be doing around 150 mph lol.
The car in S-Sport Mode shifts in Automode at 7k rpms in every gear.
Just do a test and make sure it shifts ok the 1st and 2nd gears at 7k rpms.
At this point you probably want to do 2 more type of test.
One in Normal mode and shifting it manually. Just do a test heavy on the gas and
shifting the car with the padels and the console shifter. Make sure it shifts good
under load.
The next test do it in Super Sport Mode and shifting manually. Do a full throtle
run from 1st to 4th gear. The manual shifts should be very sharp every time the
SST shifts. You will feel like driving a manual tranny and feels like clutch pupping
every time the SST shifts.
Also do a 1st to 3rd run in Super Sport Mode in Auto. Make sure the SST shifts
at 7k on its own without a problem.
If you are able to check the car from the bottom, look under the car and see or
make sure there are no oil leaks in the SST area or the motor oil pan area.
If everything checks you got a good car.
One last thing if you are allowed will be to try and launch the car.
you want to make sure the clutches have clamping force.
Good luck .

I agree with everything that has been said but wanted to add a few things..
Make sure you see the shifts in auto.... watch to make sure the car doesn't go from 1st to 3rd or skip a gear aka slipping. My 15 MR has done this two me once or twice and i called two dealers and talked to a number of MR owners in my group and they say that is normal from time to time but all the time means you clutch packs are crap.
Like the others said, run it in every mode and auto and manual to get a feel for the car however, if you do buy the car you will need to or should i say want to always run it in SPORT or SPORT to keep the clutch pack fresh. There are magnets inside that tell the car when to shift and the more the clutch packs have to work (normal mode) the more crap that builds up on the magnets and then the shifts get all jazzed up.
Launching the car... can it do it? Yes. does it like to do it? No. launching the car is one of those things where you can do it once or twice but you want want to after that unless you build the trans. The SST takes a beating when you do it and from what i understand it was put in the car to get it unstuck. Kinda like the GTR, the head engineer released a video about a year after the r35 came out talking about how the launch control was not built to be run on dry track or the street. however this was also put out after they had to rebuild the trans in alot of cars.... Cobb has a written "how to" about launching it but even they say its not recommended. However its your car, do what you want but make sure you follow all the steps b/c you WILL put the car in limp mode if you dont do it right....
I have an MR and love it. Everyone gives me **** for not getting the GSR b/c of power limitations....however i have seen people put down over 400HP and keep the TQ around 350.. safe TQ is right around 350 however if you want to get crazy then you need to become friends with Kozmic MS as they are the SST masters. they hold a few world records with the SST and have a clutch kit for the car thats good to around 600TQ
2012 W/20K on it... You have about 10K left unless you need to have the SST serviced and thats about $700 out of pocket. MiJust something to keep in mind...
there are alot of MR convos on general X forum here so if your looking for something im sure you will find it here.

If you are modified this is about a 2k fix.

Actually if you see your car skipping gears it is not the clutch packs, it is a magnet on one of the forks that is loose or failing. When it fails or glitches, the car will skip gears to prevent further damage. You should start seeing 'service transmission' error lights accompanying this, which unfortunately don't stay up for very long to get it to the dealership to diagnose.
If you are modified this is about a 2k fix.

You could try and push them to do a free transmission fluid flush just to rule that out.

Well do not modify it at all until you are out of warranty and try and get a phone shot of the error when it happens and get a printout from autozone with the code. I'm modified so have a shop doing the work on my car when I am ready to. But that behavior is definitely not normal.

Thats whats so off about Mine, it hasn't thrown any code or shown any warnings when it has happened. I will just shift around and then nothign... I drive the car in manual all the time now and so i do my best to not let the car shift. my wife drives it when i go out of town and she lets the car do its thing so it does see some auto time.

Like I said, run it like this until it gets worse and gets an error and get that thing captured somehow lol.

With your lack of viable shops in your area, a GSR would be a more practical choice over the MR. I love my MR don't get me wrong, but I would get a GSR if I didn't have a specialist close to me. Luckily I have a great shop for the MR in my same town.
