Exhaust modification
Is it possible on the factory exhaust to cut exhaust pipe portion out that is inside the factory tips without too much trouble? Is it connected internally anywhere? I'll eventually get a catback system but in the mean time I'd like to remove the fence post in a decorative cap look.

Assuming the tips are bolted on, you could un-attach them and hacksaw a few inches off the pipe. If they're welded on (and they probably are) then you're pretty much out of luck without cutting the whole tip and re-welding just the outer tips on.
It's not really worth the effort IMO, just wait and get a cat-back.

Why not? It's not like having the inner pipe recessed into the larger tip is going to give any change at all. You do realize the larger chrome tips are purely decoration so it looks "sporty". They give no change at all to the power/sound or any aspect of the car other than to look pretty. You will gain nothing but a headache if you start hacking apart the stock exhaust.
If it really bothers you, just don't look at it. When you're driving it's not like you can see them anyways. I've never even noticed the inner pipes the entire time I've owned it, still haven't seen what they look like, but I can visualize what you're talking about.
