it just started happening recently. usually from cold starts after the car's been sitting for a while. like a sharp screeching sound for 1 second and then it disappears. 2008 evo x mr. 122,000 km on it.

any idea? sound like it's coming from the engine bay. i'm due for an oil change and SSt fluid flush. that's gonna hurt already. hoping this is something minor.

 

It's hard to say without hearing it but it may well be the starter not disengaging properly.

x2 for belt (without the benefit of hearing it).

 

I'd vote belt too except the thread title says grinding followed by a post about squealing. Not sure what we're troubleshooting here.
