2010 Evo X SE - Blown Engine - Value??

Hey everyone,

I had a breakdown on the highway the other day cruising home from work and the Evo suddenly developed a loud pop & tick and basically shut itself down on the shoulder. I had it towed to my local dealer and the verdict is that a catastrophic oil pump failure caused one of the connecting rods to break and destroyed the bearings.

Final diagnosis from the dealer was a blown engine and it would need replaced. As you can imagine a new 4B11T engine would be a bit pricey. A little disappointed for a car that was maintained very meticulously and was primarily stock with NO tune and never raced.

Point of this thread is not to express my disappointment with the result, but to get a gauge of the value of the car if I were to sell it now.

Here is some basic info on the car:
-60k miles
-Phantom black
-SE with SST transmission
-Interior - I would grade an 8/10 on condition, just some normal wear and tear
-Exterior - a handful of chips on the front lip and one tiny dent in the passenger door, but otherwise very clean.
-Bone stock, excluding an Injen intake with UICP and Ray Gram Light wheels in black
-No damage and very clean garage kept car

So what do you guys think? Whats the car even worth to someone now? Ballpark..

Thanks for everyone's input.

Find tuner in area and see what they would charge to fix it. Dealer prices never pan out well for anyone but the dealer.

Good luck to ya

If you're not looking to go with a built motor for high HP (since you'd also be building an SST if you did....) there are plenty of people who have totalled an Evo X out there. Lots of good, used 4B11T long blocks as a result.

That sucks man! No mods at all, service intervals followed to a T and the engine still goes? Are you first or second owner?

Pick this up and have it shipped to a shop you trust if you don't want to do the work yourself.

Probably only worth about 12-14k to the right buyer as its blown up and has a very expensive transmission

I am the original owner.. that's right, I did all regularly schedule service and not so much as even a warning light when it happened while crusing along at 75mph on the highway.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.. I'm kind of at the place where I want to just unload the car, and if I can get $13/14k for it I'm ok walking away at that price.

If you put a motor in it your good for a long while, I think it will take a while to sell it without an engine. Good luck with her!

Does the injen intake use the stock MAF housing? If not this may be the source of where things might go bad on an untuned motor.

Yes, but you were running modifications you weren't tuned for them however. Running mods without a tune is one of the worse things you can do for turbo cars. The EVO is more tough than say a Subaru to handle it, but you're still asking for trouble.

Get 4-5k and drop in a new engine, sucks but is what it is and your'e not going to sell it for much without that.

Is your short block damaged? If not, I want it... We like to keep a spare built up and ready.

I'll agree with the general synopsis of everyone here so far. I know it sucks, but if you can afford to repair the car it would put you would be in a much better position later on to replace the bottom end.

It'd probably take you as much work to sell it with a blown engine as it would to replace it. The market for people looking to buy 10K car that won't crank is very slim.

This is the problem, you are almost forced to replace the engine at this point if you want real money for it.

I say fix it then drive it for another 40k and sell it at 100k. That way you get to enjoy the car and some what get the value from spending for a new engine.

Yeah, most of the comments are on-point (though an intake without a tune is usually fine on these cars since they run rich from the factory, not to mention it wouldn't cause an oil pump failure!)

It's probably worth $10-12k with a bad engine and will take a while to sell but I know it can be hard to come up with $3-4k to get a used engine swapped in too. But that's the same issue a potential buyer would face.

Sorry about your situation. Good luck with it!

Are you sure it wasn't the timing chain stretching?

I'm pretty sure the new redesigned timing chain didn't come out until the 2011 models.

Just throwing the thought out there because during my forum searches I've never read of the oil pumps going bad randomly on the 4B11T's
