Most Evo shops do a flat rate on trans/clutch installs though so if you pay more than $1k to install it, you're getting hosed.

It is expensive. BUT, consider a built 5 speed with all the options for a GSR is like $3k+ from like TRE or similar, and a good twin plate clutch is close to $2k, the price difference isn't "insane" per se.
