if you had $1000...
Can beat them easily in the corners.. isn't that what these cars are all about?
Every time I've modded, I have regretted it. Louder, stiffer, less reliable, etc. About the only mods I'm a firm believer in for a street car are brake mods (fluid, shims, pads). I feel like working on driver mod is always better personally
I love my Evo!**

I don't feel that a tune hurts reliability so much though that I wouldn't do it.
Yes but from a roll, stock they are nothing spectacular. Roughly 300hp for a 3,500+ lbs car is never going to feel super fast. Anyone doing a pull in a stock Evo in 3rd gear at highway speeds can attest to that! The new accord is packing 252 rated hp at around 3,300lbs and it has a pretty fast shifting 10 speed. An Evo rated at 291 hp at a stockish 3,550lbs BARELY has a better power-to-weight ratio and this is if you have the manual. New Camry weighs about the same as Evo and packs over 300hp.

AWD doesn't help when you aren't doing a 4,000+ rpm launch FYI.
I appreciate all of the responses—I don’t plan on a huge build, just a few bolt-ons and a tune over the next year or so. It sounds like I should get everything in working order first (fluid changes, etc.). I just bought the TurboXS exhaust, cosworth filter and an AP3–which I will install after the maintenance check up. I’ll poke around the regional forums, but I have a hunch there isn’t many users in good ol’ Vermont. I would be happy with mid-300’s for HP, nothing too crazy.
Sorry I think we are just talking past each other. The specific use case you are talking about is really out of the Evo's element is what I'm saying and I think your just saying that you want it to do better in that context.
This is a cornering car not a speed / 1/4 mile car. That being said, the power 'should' be around 350 on these stock so they don't get stepped to by literally anything. It's a wonderful car, but much like the Subaru, the stock numbers over time just don't cut it when everything out there has the same or more in a family car. Love the EVO but minor mods are almost necessary to make it really enjoyable.

I agree with Migs647 and Zerbsberger. Drive the car STOCK for a bit and make SURE its in tip top shape. Here's why:
You just said that you have $1,000 to spend on the 2011 Evo GSR you just bought. Based on the year of the car, I'm ASSUMING you probably paid somewhere around $24,000 for the car. Unless you put down a LARGE amount of $$, I'm also ASSUMING that your car payments are about $300+ per month. Insurance is probably around $70/month. So, you're paying $370/month just to drive the car. I can tell you that the Evo is a little pricier of a car to maintain/repair if you're not mechanically inclined. I would say to put that $1,000 into an "Evo X" account and add $$$ to it every month. That money will grow each month. When you finally hit a certain amount, if you still want to mod, do it all at one time. I've known so many people who put performance parts on their cars, only to be financially strapped when those mods lead to problems because they were done incorrectly OR those parts lead to increased wear & tear which means your maintenance will be more frequent. Your tires and brake pads will wear out faster and you're easily looking at $800 for a good set of tires. Pads (and maybe rotors) will add even more to the upkeep costs of this car. As many people have stated on these forums, "If you want to play, you gotta pay." As long as you understand that concept, you'll be prepared for all of the costs associated with this car. I think the Evo is plenty fun stock for daily driving. Unless you're looking for more power/better handling because you're tracking it or going out LOOKING for cars to race, mods are not really worth it in my opinion.
