EVO X EVAP System

Ok so long story short. Purchased a 2013 EVO X GSR recently and the car sounded and drove amazing. On the way home i had to stop and get gas so I filled up and topped off an extra $.50. When i pulled out of the gas station about 100 yards down the road she died at the light and would not start. Pushed her off the road and sat for a bit and got her to start with lots of throttle input. Limped her home and started to investigate the next day. Did a compression check and it passed with flying colors, leak down test was perfect as well. i replaced the O2 sensor for the AFR gauge and found that she was running really rich, like 12 AFR at idle, but normal / slightly rich while cruising, nothing out of the ordinary for a break in tune on a new motor. Downloaded the tuning software and sent the file to the tuner that tuned her and he said its the same file he has.

My question is does anyone have a diagram of the EVAP system or can explain to me the details of the EVO X system? i saw a diagram that showed the line from the canister to the tank is at the base of the filler neck. I'm wondering if when i topped off the tank maybe wet fuel got into the EVAP system which is causing the richness because it seems to be clearing up slowly, almost like as the wet fuel dries out its going back to normal. does that make sense to anyone else? or have any idea where else to look for why she would randomly run rich after filling up?

Thank You

Maybe its bad gas?

Do you smell fuel while the engine is not running? If you do then check out the fuel pump cover to see if there is a issue there. Does this Evo have flex fuel?

Wasn’t bad gas, that was my first thought as well. It is flex fuel ready but still tuned on 93. There is a faint fuel smell while parked but not inside the car. I checked the hanger when I was using the pump to empty some fuel and it’s sealed pretty good.

I’m really leaning towards wet fuel getting into the evap system when filling up. I got down to 1/4 tank and fuel trims were perfect at idle. Put 5 gals of 93 in it today and fuel trims are back down into the 12s at idle. Have a feeling I’ll just be deleting the evap system all together and just vent to atmosphere. Getting her tuned Saturday and I’ll have the tuner just tune out the Evap stuff. I’ll pull the Evap line from the intake and cap it just to be sure though first.

Sorry for all yall environmentalist out there, but I’m pro global warming. Wouldn’t mind my house being a beach front property.

Well it does seem like you are suffering from gas vapor inhalation lol. If you delete the EVAP system the fuel smell will be stronger than it is now. I hope you like the strong smell of gas all the time permeating into everything you own.

Its strange to see that happen on a stock fuel system tho. Usually this can be caused by an inline pump or SS lines that are not rated for gas.

Unfortunately it seems gas vapor inhalation is in my future. Although I was thinking of maybe mounting the vapor solenoid in a way that it exits out the rear instead of inside the bumper area.

I did forget to mention that the fuel system is not stock at all. She came equipped with the full Radium fuel system, the hanger, duel 450s, -10 lines, radium rail and some 2150 injectors. She is fully a built car with a sleeved motor and 6466 turbo and all the supporting mods you could ask for and more. She was a once in a lifetime find on Facebook, guy that sold it to me didn’t know what he had. I’m loving the twin disk clutch as well, such a breeze over the leg press of a clutch in my eclipse.

do you have the first gen radium hanger?

Update…. Went digging into the car some and my OCD kicked in. Found some questionable wiring so I fixed some of that but gonna have to go through the rest of it. Gotta put a oil pressure gauge in and connect it to the EMU Black.

Anyway, it is not an Evap issue because it was never connected back after the PO built the motor. So my thoughts are as follows. It was either bad gas, gonna test that theory one day when I have time to sit at the gas station for an hour in case there is a repeat issue. Second thought is that the return line in the iridium hanger sits low enough so that when full it’s under the fluid level. Which is causing fuel pressure to build up and letting in metered fuel into the motor. Gonna pull the hanger out next weekend and see what’s going on there. Till then I’ll continue to live my live 5 gallons at a time.

Radium current fuel hanger design does have a hole for the fuel vapor pressure sensor. I have seen flex fuel gauge installs where the blue wire for the fuel vapor pressure sensor is tapped for the signal for Flex Fuel.

This is a poor choice when trying to install flex fuel into the Evo X. Its better to use a plug and play kit like the Evo Dynamic one.

from what I’ve researched and verified what on the car it looks like this is the kit that was installed luckily. The gauge in the car seems to work great and is pretty accurate to. The original owner didn’t wire it in to the ECU though so I’ll be doing that today as well as adding an oil pressure sensor and gauge, and like I said wiring it into the ECU as well.
