installing extended studs on rear hubs?

I've already installed the extended studs on the fronts, fairly simple.

I took the caliper off, and then the rotor, and then tapped out the old studs and put the new ones in. I pulled them through with a nut, some washers and an impact wrench.

I went to do the rears and I got as far as taking the caliper off. I couldn't get the rotor off, I think it was seized and i didn't have a way to get it of. I checked to see if i could see the back of the studs on the other side, and couldn't.

Does the whole hub assembly have to come off the car to gain access to the studs? Or can i replace the studs on the car with just the rear rotor off, just like the fronts?

Dumb question, but did you have the e-brake off? I'm pretty sure this car has a drum-in-disc rear parking brake. Even if it is not engaged, it will be harder to take off than a disc without the drum-in-disc design.

How did you attempt to remove the rotors?

I'm not sure how it is on the Evo X, but on the 9, and my DSMs, there are two threaded holes you can thread bolt into to push the rotor away from the hub. Without these getting rotors off is a real PITA.

yes, the holes exist, but i didn't have a bolt, so i couldn't try it. If i manage to get the rotors off is it just a straight install similar to the fronts?

Old trick from the Evo 8 that might work on the X, too...

Pop the hood, there is a 10MM bolt that holds the plastic headlight assembly to the chasis.

Unscrew it and use it to thread it through the small hole in the rotor.

Remember to put it back.

Post your results so we know if this applies to the X.

Just want to post a follow up for future reference...

in the end i took it in to a local shop to do the work. He originally quoted me an hour or less to do the work, and said he wouldn't charge me any more than an hour if it took any longer than that anyways. so i thought it was a fair investment.

The mech said the studs were too long to put in while the hubs were still on the car, so in the end the hubs had to come off and were pressed into the hub while it was off the car.

The studs I used were Sparco studs that came with the 16mm spacers. I did not take any photos of the old studs vs the new studs, so i don't know exactly how much longer the new studs were. I think they will allow the use of the stock lugs. I am using a open ended tuner lug, so this is unverified, but i'm told by the shop that i should still be able to use my old lugs.

And in my research to find the thread pitch of the bolt that would fit inside the two holes on the rotor, i came across this info:

It takes a 8m x 1.5 bolt I think.
If not it is a 8m x 1.25
found here:

(and i didn't try the bolt from the headlight)
