Unless you are someone who lives in a constant state of depression while owning anything non-lowered.

Guys seriously thank you for all the feedback - i honestly thought i'd only get a couple replies and a bunch of flames.

I definitely understand i'm never going to get into a setup that feels as soft as the stockers, but was hoping someone could recommend a coilover that absorbs more of the sharp, abrupt bumps than OEM shocks with aftermarket springs can.

Like a good snow springs on a nice Reiger suspension... oh man. That is my dream(the Reigers).
But it is way too much money for DD without a real noticable gain for this guy , since he ask for drive it daily on public roads. Makes absolutely no sense to get anything beyond stock for him.
Rally suspensions are (higher end ones) can be much softer then stock, since they do need to be able to run insnowy conditions too. So they can be adjustable way below the stock softness all the way to the very stiff track set up. And anything between.
Cheapo suspensions will never even come close to the oem suspensions for DD. In fact i wouldnt get one of those from teh begin with. Simple Springs and the right set up will take you just as far.

Rob
I said stiffer spring rates - not stiffer ride. real high-dollar coils will give a better ride, but the spring rates will still be stiffer than stock

though you are right about rally suspensions, forgot about those being softer

either way, same difference - stay stock or go springs

KWs...Robispec Street modified versions if you have the budget (see my review of the more aggresive Clubsport versions), Ohlins with their stock spring rate (have ridden in an Evo X with more aggresive spring rates...see Clipse3gt's thread). If on a budget not sure. Noise likes his Apexi (there is a thread) but I have no personal experience. Have been told by several that Hand R are too harsh for DD (see Dave GSR's thread on the other site).

Have heard the HKS are not bad for this platform (also a thread...do a search) from a poster's judgement that I trust because of his history (had KWs, Ohlins and a few others).

My driving with the X has been all DD street driving and mine are great with more aggressive springs than the normal KWs on a X so I recomend them without hesitation. THe Robi streets (better valving) should be very good for a DD.

That makes me really happy. I've always leaned towards KW for some reason and I'm glad my intuition was dead on. Thanks for the info guys. Very much appreciated!

Another option is Fortune Auto 500 series. Supposed to be very friendly for DD and good for the OCCASIONAL track day. I picked up a set and will have a review soon.

DD my evo and put Ohlins on last summer. Eventually took them off because I wasn't getting my money's worth. They're far stiffer than stock and there's more transfer of road noise with the top mounts. It just wasn't for me so I went with Swift Sports on stock struts. I miss the Ohlins from time to time, but overall I'm much happier with springs.

The biggest this is adjustable shocks. This can put a big impact on how the ride reacts to bumps and smooth spots on the road. Sure, the springs can be harsh, but the shocks compression and rebound can really make a difference in smooth or harsh ride quality. If you are set on getting coilovers, a lot of manufactures offer custom spring rates. Give them a call and tell them what your looking for. They will know exactly what they can offer, and probably have got the question before.

Let's be a bit more precise about this. What you want for a nice ride is a shock that is highly digressive in bump. If a maker's typical shock isn't digressive, then asking for different valving will probably make no difference at all, since what they change when they give you custom valving for different rate springs is the low-speed bump and/or rebound. Only a maker that really knows what it's doing (and is probably not based in Asia) can produce a good shock for a DD. That's why people often suggest KW. Nicely digressive and the adjuster only alters rebound, so it stays pretty nice even when cranked up.

Get some KW v3 I have them on my DD evo x and I love them. I drive my evo to work and back every day and drive it everywhere on the weekends and I couldn't be happier with my KW's

The best part about this type of thread, people give advice based on they one coilovers they have.. and of course that is a best by the way. Lol
But how many actually has a real base for comparision between them? Like i was sitting my budy car, but i think mine is better. And so on so forth.
How many tried used different suspension back and forth with a same car same set up to make a statement?
I mean how do you compere and give out advice with basically one coilover experience, and probably 0 testing in different set ups on that?
That is my question

I have set time on 7 different Evo X coilovers for my own reports and reviews with over 300 - 1000 km in each.. General ride comfort and brisk drives are what I could squeeze out of most of them. But only 3 were in actually lapping situations.

But your point is valid!

That is my question

I have ridden and driven and EVO x with Ohlins, Robis KWs (the ohlins and robis were back to back) and a couple of others (AMR and one I cant remember). Driven an STI on stance, a DSM on megans and other chinese crap coilovers and on adjustable KYBs with replacement springs. Also have stock KWs on another car.

Additionally, drove a couple of evo xs with swift and eibach springs with OEM KYBs.

Not exactly back to back on the SAME car but close enough to get an idea. Also have driven (raced actually) single seaters and a oval race prepared stock car with real race shocks. So, while I don't claim to have the technical knowledge that Iowa has, I have some practical experience to draw on.
