No offense but 16-18 year old's crash with 120 under the hood. More power + young age = US death toll to rise.

In HS I had three friends die racing. Not pretty

And if you are 16-18 and get offended by this, read it again and understand where I am coming from.

I understand where your coming from , but I've been driving for about 2 years (i know thats nothing compared to the other people in here who have been driving for like 30 years) and i never got a ticket or accident and i drive a eclipse gsx with about 250 HP. So i think I can handle an Evo. But thanks for your concern (i guess) .

I think they should raise the legal driving age to 18. When I was 16 (4 years ago only) I got in two accidents. They both were pretty bad, but both WERENT my fault. HOWEVER BOTH could have been avoided if I was as good of a driver as I am now. I think those two extra years could save lives. I know its off topic, but oh well. Now I am only 20, and still probably younger than most of you, but at least I can keep a 350whp GST straight through the twisites =)

I don't think anyone has any issue with a mentally mature individual driving/owning a car in the quality/class of the EVO. Does that mean teenagers are all immature? NO. However, it seems that's the general case.

It's like putting a weapon in a kid hand, you don't know when things will go wrong

If you/anyone can purchase the EVO by themselves, more power to you. However, we have heard way to many "I'm not your typical immature teens" comment here....Well

How are you honestly affording an EVO by yourself? I do get mad when I hear some kid has the smae car as me and his parents bought it for them. That's just me. I am working a lot of hours and going to school to have this car. My opinion only, but I feel I will appreciate the car more.

the legal driving age in NJ is 17, but you get a provisional liscence til 18. you can't drive at night, with more than 1 person, etc. i think it's a good idea (glad i got my full liscence at 17 ) and will help to improve skills and awareness. i don't think it's necessarily the fact that an 18 year old kid can't handle a fast car....it's the fact that this particular car is not targetted towards that age group. i mean there's a kid in my town that drives an M5, do you think that's right? I like the M5, i also like the EVO, and just about every other car that is nice and has good looks, etc. but performance is expensive. you also have to realize that the maintenance on an EVO is much greater than that on the Lancer. that has to be taken into account...etc. If you can handle it, then great. But it is targetted towards the mid-late twenties group who are car enthusiasts and have steady careers that can support the maintenance and costs of this high performance car.

It's not that I'm mad, it's that I doubt an 18 year old has 29 grand with which to do as he pleases.

Or, conversely, has enough to put down a significant amount and finance the rest for $500/60 mo.

well...plenty of us "youngsters" got parents... who'd like to buy them a car...

Raise the license age...fuq dat! that sux...we already gotta wait a whole damn 1 1/2 years from the time we get our permit until we get our actual REAL license that lets us drive wherever, with whoever, whenever. (in CA..duno bout other states).

As I put, I don't have any problem with "mentally mature" individual owning a car like this....now age has some relation to that but not all...you see a lot of older people acting/driving without giving any concern about others...

That's why I stretch the point "mentally mature"

another perspective is, there are plenty of 16 year olds that just shouldn't be driving a car, period. EVO, Lancer, civic, whatever. and then there are those that are mature enough and responsible enough to be able to handle an EVO and not put the thing into a telephone poll. but i think the big point is, as age grows, maturity and responsibility seems to grow also. not for everybody, but there are a hell of a lot more responsible 24 year olds than 16 year olds. that's the point. so i am not misunderstood:

say for 1000 16 year olds, 300 of them are mature and responsible enough not to take something like an EVO and wrap it around a telephone poll within the first week. i contest that, in the 24 year old category, there would be say 700 responsible people that can handle the EVO. 300 of them were responsible from 16-24, but now 400 more gained responsibility with age. THAT'S the point. and that's why the evo is targetted at that age group. that, and all the parts and power and performance that go into it are EXPENSIVE. you can't make a 270hp awd monster for under 20 grand. lucky they made it under 30.

Does it matter how old you are?? I mean who are you people to say a 16-24 year old person cant have a Evo cuz it too fast or to expensive?? It doesnt make sense!! Mitsu has no targeted age group they just want people to buy the evo no matter who. They just want their money. As for a 18 year old affording a $30k car I can afford it, i make $12 a hour and about $1000 every two weeks depending on the hours. So whats a petty little $500 a month? Well Im finished I just dont see how you people can say a 18-24 year old person cant have a expensive or fast car. Have fun with your evos and i dont wanna be mean but i HOPE one of you 27-100 year olds crash your evo, because thats basically what your trying to say about 18-24 year olds. And not be so judgementel about a 18-24 year old driving a "expensive" fast car.

Most of the people who say age isnt a big deal are quite young them selves...

Im 18, yes. Should I own an Evo or STi, I dont think so. Even though I do have plenty of experience with GoKarts, Jet-Skis, and plenty of ATVs.

Sea-Doo made a Jet-Ski two years back called the R-XX. At the time it was their highest performaning boat. In order to buy one, you were required to be a member of the IJSBA (similar to SCCA). This was a great idea.

Dealers should require people to take driving classes similar to those at Rally Schools around the world. Hell, I think everyone should take these classes in order to drive on the street. If I had the cash, it would be the first thing I would do.

Hold on.....are you saying that younger teens cant drive as good as you guys? I may not be the best driver, but my dad and I grew up in Jamaica and he used to race there and he used to race here back in the 70's. jamaica has the winding roads and the s-bends and such. my dad is a great driver and can handle many cars, cuz he has driven adn raced many different ones. he has taught me and continues to teach me what he knows, and i may not be like him now, but im gettin better each day. he has driven in the evo 5 cuz my cousin has it in jamaica and my uncle has a skyline. i can bet taht what he teaches me and when he is done, i will drive A LOT better than the drivers out there now.

I don't think anyone is saying that young people don't have the right to own an Evo, or any expensive car. If they can afford it (with or without their parents help) the so be it. What people are try to say is that most young drivers are less capable of handleing an Evo (or similar car). Notice I used most in that last sentence. I know drivers still in their teens that are excellent drivers and often beat me at auto-x in slower cars. I know adults in their 30s that should never be allowed to drive again. But as a general rule of thumb, most young drivers do not have the experience to get themselves of the situations (ones they caused and ones they didn't) that more experienced drivers could.

I got my Mustang Cobra at 20, and looking back, it was a somthing of a mistake. I took chances with that car that I wouldn't dream of taking today. But that car was pretty forgiving, and an excellent first performance car if there is such a thing. I eventually outgrew that car, and moved onto my fd. If I would have had my fd at 20 I don't think I would be alive today... You can get into trouble so fast with high performance cars, and experience is worth something....
