Completely new to Cars in general
man the dude wanted help with cars and after some flames the thread got jacked
....anyways, to the thread starter, just look around on different car forums...theres one for every car almost. for example, if you're looking at a sentra se-r spec-v, google "sentra se-r spec-v forums". this way you can learn a lot about each cars. then visit all the car makers' websites to look for different cars for each company and the cars' specifications.
this site will be your best friend: www.howstuffworks.com
search for things like engine, transmission, gears, differentials, etc and you will learn a lot about how everything in a car come together to make a car what it is. after understanding the basics for how a car works, you will have a better idea what you might be looking for in a car as far as performance/mechanical functions go.
after that, like aformentioned, start exploring all sorts of automotive makers and their line of cars. you need to know what cars belong in what automotive category (performance, family, SUV, minivan etc) if you absolutely no nothing about cars at this point, you need to research first. wanting a decent looking 4 door car with a decent engine is all very vague. it depends on what you want out of an engine, is it insane horsepower and/or torque, or great miles per gallon? also decide what driveline you want in a car; front/rear/all wheel drive.
anyways, good luck with your research.

I took you guys advice and have been looking at other cars. I think there was a misunderstanding, I'm not building a car to race (persay) or just for speed reasons. I see you guys debating over which car beats which and which is faster. I was reallly looking for a car that I can make look really really good and have a decent engine (between Crappy and Amazing). I was look at the following cars, just driving the daily routine and browsing the internet. I really want a 4 dour so if you guys can provide any insite as to which car I should go with. Since EVO"S are so friggin expensive.
Mazda-6
Jetta
Lancer (regular)
Camry
My budget is about 15K MAX
gotta do something, cant get an evo

hey arithmetic my cousin has a built spec v and he was dead even with my evo on a short road course(highway pulls are a different story) while driving circles around wrx's, rsx's, ralliart's, g35's and sti's. i do agree with the cat failure though. also didn't cunningham win or come in second in the scca last year in a spec v. midas, like other people are saying do the research and buy what you like. when it comes down to it you're the one who has to drive it. it's cool that you have been bitten by the car bug. i just bought a 92 lexus sc300 5spd for $3000 and i go to bed at night thinking about turbo kits. good luck. thanks.

Definately the SRT-4 is your choice. For that price range there is nothing it gets closer to that. The potencial on the SRT-4 is great, they are fast and their upgrade stages are cheap as hell, unfortunately they are FWD.
Another choice is the WRX, but I personally DON'T suggest that car for transmission issues.
The EVO is not a choice at all for that price range.

SRT-4s are completely out of his league. He wants a brand new car for no more than $14k, and SRT4s base price is $21k without tax/registration/stealership paperwork...
Dude, get a used Talon TSi/Eclipse GST/GSX. You can find a nice 97/99 with low miles and well within your budget. That's the way to go.

good cars to look at:
mazdaspeed protege
dodge neon srt4
subaru impreza wrx
e36 m3
and of course, the pre-evo, galant vr-4
all 4 door, all different years, all would have to be used, all fairly simple to do the basics on and all have good internet resources. for where to find info about cars, the aforementioned howstuffworks.com is great, and then once you get a car and realize that turbos are awesome, "maximum boost" by corky bell is an awesome book, but maybe a bit too much if you don't understand how an engine works

He does not mention anything about new car. He just says that he wants a car for a price range of $10000-$14000
Carlitos
i would be looking for a used WRX. you should be able to find one for around 14-15k if it is a few years old. decide on what type of car you want (NA vs boosted, FWD vs RWD vs AWD) and go from there. if you decide you want a subaru, (i am still a huge fan of the impreza 2.5 rs) log on to www.nasioc.com and dont post anything for at least a month, just read everything you can. it takes some time but there is good information out there. dont be intimidated by everyone else too. at least you can admit you dont know anything about cars, now you have to fix it.
