Do you guys all leave your radar detectors in the car all the time, or do you put them away everytime you park? I don't feel too good about leaving a $400 thing laying in the car!!

mine just sits in the car

I have my mounted in the lowest position possible just off the steering column above the wiper line.

Yes I will have virtually zero rear coverage but if a cop is coming from behind me...well then he can have me.

I am questioning how well the HID's will shine through the coating.

Maybe I put on to much, I don't think so though.

I'll have to check tonight.
Please post your thoughts on how well it works with the HIDs. I thinking of putting on the headlights of my IX. Can you get a picture of it on the headlights? I'm wondering how uniform the coating is. I saw the installation video, and it looks like the coverage is very non-uniform.

I've got my V1 mounted above the rearview mirror on the driver's side. I had to angle the mirror slightly downward on the driver's side, and I had to put a small amount of silicon sealant on the suction cups to get the cups to form a vacuum on the shade dots on the window. The power cord is routed between the headliner and the window and then behind the passenger's side pillar trim. I like having it up high for maximum radar sensitivity (clear line of sight to the rear too) and the stealth appearance. Its not the optimal height for laser detection, but the shade dots do provide some background sun IR reduction.

My RX65 came with a warning about the suction cups leaving a mark in the glass over time on some makes of cars. Is the Evo one of them?

Veil over the HID will reduce the brightness. I overcame this by masking off the exact area where the HID cresent exits the headlight.

Turn your headlights on when in a dark garage. Place a piece of paper over the headlight and trace the beam pattern. Use this template to cut out two pieces of clear contact paper. Apply these small cutout sections to the headlight before you Veil them. After Veil is dry, remove the contact paper templates to reveal the clean path for the HID beam.

Even a "good" application of Veil will be inperfect. To me it's no different than driving a slightly dirty car or a car with a few paint chips on the hood. I would never Veil a show car, but my Evo is a daily driver and the cops around here use laser a lot.

You should really mount it how fraser shows in the above pics. It should be mounted low and in the center of the dash. This is mainly for the benefit of the laser. At 500 feet, the beam is only 36" wide, I believe, which means if you mount it too high you run the risk of the detector not being able to pick it up because cops go for the front license plate or headlights. Also the angle at which it is pointing is critical too. I think I saw a member who posted a pic of his Rx65? Anyways it looked as if it were pointing towards the sky, which definitely doesn't help.

The high mount vs. low mount will depend on many vaiables. For some the low mount helps with laser detection. For some a high mount helps increase radar range (and keep the detector more out of sight).

In my situation, even with a high mounted radar/laser detector I have picked up laser in 5 of 7 times I've been hit. The cops around here target vehicles as far as they can see them. Most laser gun manuals reccommend 1500 feet. At the distances they try to acquire targets around here, the beam is large enough to trigger my high mounted detector, AND most cops do not use a tripod (which makes the beam bounce around).

I also mount my detector high because my headlight/plate area is covered with other countermeasures.

If you have a Laser Jammer your just asking for a fine. If they try and clock your speed and cant get a response they will just go after you they wont ignore it. Its a $2000.00+ fine and not to mention they take it away from you.

I was in my friends car when he got caught with a radar detector in his car a few years back and the cop said "did you forget to turn that thing on?" my friend replied with "I thought you were a super market" (His radar went off all the time so it was pointless)
