First, Ill explain my situation a little bit. Im looking into buying a new car within the next 6 months, and need a few opinions. I currently own an 02 Civic EX coupe which is fine for commuting, etc. but its not really that great of a platform for any kind of serious modifying (besides learning how to turn a wrench, etc.). So the civic's gonna be gone and Ive pretty much limited my choices for a new car down to the following: a used Acura RSX type S, a new 07 Civic Si, or a used Evo. With that said, here are my questions:

1. How does the Evo perform if youre using it as your only car (i.e. are there many reliability issues)?

2. Being an Evo owner and seeing first hand how they are commonly driven, would you ever buy a used Evo?

3. If you had around 21-22k what would you personally buy (Im talking outright, no downpayments)

4. Does anyone have any experience with Evo's as they increase in mileage, in terms of reliability (i.e. 60k+)

Let me finish by saying that Im attracted to the Evo because not only its incredible potential for modifying, but its awd would be great in the NE winters, and its pretty much my dream car (or realistic dream car if you wanna put it that way ). Id really love to find a used Evo around the 20k price range, but Im also willing to wait a few years down the road if this turns out to be not so sound of a move and move to my other two choices.

So whats everyone's opinion?
1. I drive an STi, not an Evo, but I can tell you from experience with an STi, which apparently does not ride as harsh as an Evo, is that the car is a constant mosh pit. The ride is stiff, you will get bounced around, and the interior is very noisy. The steering is lightning quick and you really need to pay attention when driving either of these cars. As soon as you sneeze you could find yourself on the shoulder of the road. There is no "lounging" when behind the wheel of one of these cars. You're always driving. They aren't Cadillacs. If a stiff ride doesn't matter to you, and I do mean stiff, then it's fine as a daily driver. Just keep in mind that the ride of these cars is akin to strapping a milk crate to a wagon and having a horse pulling it over a bumpy road.

2. Would I buy a used Evo? HELL NO.

3. If I had to buy something outright, I would buy a 2006 Subaru WRX TR. They're a stripped model that sells for around $22,000.

4. I know a few Evo owners and while some of them have had horrid luck, others have had good luck. Luck of the draw, my friend.

I've had zero reliability issues (or defects) with my IX. It's my DD and part-time family car

Absolutely not, unless I could find a totally unmolested car that was previously owned by an adult.

VW GTI

I love my Evo IX more than any other car I've ever driven! I would not buy a used one to save my life though... especially an 03 for $20-$21K.

I love the RSX type-s and one of my good friends has one. He has a full exhaust, injectors, comptech supercharger, ecu upgrade, and 50-shot of NOS. I can still take him with my stock Evo IX if he doesn't use the NOS. It is definitely a fun car but the handling and traction doesn't even compare with the Evo. I can get him off the line everytime... but with the NOS shot he pulls by me in 2nd gear and says about a car length ahead up to 100 mph. Haven't taken them faster than that yet.

I also like the new VW GTi. Its a fun comfortable car that will have a ton of aftermarket parts available within a year. I think they base price around $21K, not completely sure though. I know they have some fancy options that can make the price skyrocket. Just don't get the "deli-slicer" wheels with them because they look ridiculous.

I was looking at all of these and the STi when I bought the Evo a month ago. I really wanted performance and four doors. It's awesome when you can smoke a two seater car when you have a car seat for your 2-yr old in the back of your Evo I didn't pick the STi because I didn't want a used one and I don't like the front ends of the new ones.
