Tubo Timer - Not a clue which one!!!

Anyone fitted one of these to an Evo 7?

Is it simple to do myself or should I leave it to the garage to do? I'm fairly technical but no guru....

Any recommendations for manufacturer of timer to go for?

I haven't got a clue (yet) but I'm learning!

Thanks,

Dave.

I purchased the HKS Type-1. It has an auto timer feature based on revs, rev meter, shift warning, speed display & warning, and some performance timer functions. It is a good timer, but has functions not everyone will use.

It is easy to install a TT. You can usually get a harness that is plug-and-play for the main connection. You will need an RPM (or sometimes O2) signal for any auto timer features and a connection to the emergency brake for the safety shutoff. The HKS Type-1 also requires a speed sensor connection for the performance timer functions.

You can search for info on other brands. HKS, Blitz, Greddy and Apexi all make timers.

I'd refer to it as a protection of my investment. To each, his own.

I don't get this forum sometimes ... someone asks about a TT and people say it's a novelty, but when someone posts pics of their Defi gauges they are the most wonderful things in the world! Gauges are a necessity when modding these cars, but at $200+ a pop, I think the money would be better spent elsewhere. You can get the same readouts with gauges that are $50 a piece. It would just be nice if people would provide information to those who ask questions rather than critiquing their taste.

No way not all the time especially if a person is in a rush or just plain wants to leave his car after having some boosting fun

Otherthan that +1 on staying out of boost the last couple minutes of driving.

and the HKS unit is nice...

+1 your turbo is water AND oil cooled. Just take a cool down lap off boost and you are golden.

Those turbo timers are worse than worthless. For normal driving there is absolutely no need for the "cool down" period. If you drive so hard that the turbo needs cooling down, you can certainly sit and wait a minute or so before turning off the engine.
The possibility of accidentally letting the clutch out automatically after turning off and pulling out the ignition key, while the engine is running, is much more likely to cause damage to your car than any lack of cooling down. Also, whenever any one else drives your car even for just a moment (like a valet or a service tech), they run the risk of having an accident. Besides, you run the risk of screwing up your wiring during installation (it has happened, check the archives), voiding your warranty and certainly wasting perfectly good money on a piece of crap. BTW, I speak from experience. I thought the TT was a good thing to have until I installed one in my WRX.... Save your money for better things

1. It uses a harness....no need to screw up your wiring. Next time try that.

2. What happens if you dont want to take a "cool down lap?" Mitsu does recommend you cool down after. So after long highway driving, you'll want to do so.

3. You can turn the TT off if it's going to be serviced or valeted....It's ONE button

The Greddy TT is being sold for 75 here, so it's cheap. But to each his own.

i dontthink turbo timers are that neccesary, but the apex one is cool. its small and i think it keeps the car on as long as it is needed, if its 1 minute or 2, depending on how you were just driving it. i think thats what it does or something like it. research.

Not all TTs use a harness. Also, there is always thye possibility of a screw-up. Just where does the TT harness plug in anyway? AFAIK, the wiring harness of the EVO has no extra for a particular TT...

The only time you need a cool down lap is after several hot laps. Not after driving to see aunt Rosie in California... If you drive anywhere near the speed limit you'll have driven the equivalent of several cool down laps anyway. TT is totally useless for regular day to day driving.

Great, that's good to know. If I had one of those in my car I'd certainly use that button to keep it turned off all the time. IMHO those things are totally superfluous. Maybe the TT you are talking about might have some useful features, but there are many which do not have those features. Also, the wiring has to be modified no matter what. Unless the car is prewired for the TT, you are going to have to slpice, cut, solder or somehow alter of affect the car's wiring harness. Sure, most times it's easy and relatively simple, but there is always the chance for a screw up. I don't mind taking a chance for something I find useful or interesting but I don't think the TT is worth it.
