Question rich or lean?

Whats up I am new with turbo cars and I have an 06' IX. I have a 3" cat back exhaust system on it for now with a open cone filter with no air box. I understand that evo's from the factory are set rich, and even though I am still running stock boost settings with those slight mods should I still be fine and not too lean? My future mods are an intake down pipe, test pipe and an MBC before I got to get a custom tune @ TT Racing. Thanks ...

you should be fine. after you put on catback + intake, you should run a little bit leaner. The best thing is to get it tune. Keep the A/F around 10.5 to 11.00 at higher rpm.

With how rich the stock tune runs, you won't have issues with running too lean. The AFR goes pig rich once you're in full boost. Most dynos are set to read 10:1 as the base so they can't even read as low as your AFR is going.

you should have had the car tuned already just for the open element air filter.I can almost guarentee you your running lean.

Question reply

I am new to turbo cars and all but I don't think just an open element is going to make my car run too lean. Plus isn't the leaner you are the more power you make with any engine.. Only to a certain extent though without being too lean??????

You need to spend some time researching mod paths and potential pitfalls, an intake should not be on your list....

I am trying to find out why a bigger throttle body is not a popular mod on a turbo engine as it is on a N/A motor. Also I am not doing this mod just wondering why it does not seem popular like it is with an N/A motor?

Because the stock T body is fine for the stock turbo. If I were going to run without a tune, I would just put the stock air box back on if I were you. That open filter is seriously messing with the maf readings, and without a good custom tune, that could lead you to power losses rather than gains. Just keep all the parts other than the exhaust off the car until you get a good custom tune.

I didnt mean dangerousely lean. But anytime you go to an open air filter your gonna run leaner than stock (obviousely). In my opinion i dont think you should hammer the crap out of the car until you do the rest of your mods and get tuned.

Even with an open filter intake, your car will not run excessively lean. I installed my open cone filter the day before my custom tune and on the day of my tune, on the baseline at full boost, the car was pig rich. I did run into problems on the drive down with the car's idle stumbling a tad bit and getting irritated by the pshhhh noise from the DV, but your motor will not blow because of an intake.
