Considering an RS, I need into plz...
Hello,
I'm considering the EVO RS as my next car. I tried searching but was not able to find the specifics of my questions.
What are the exact differences between the years that the RS has been available?
Assume I can get a 275/40-17 mounted on the stock width wheels. How bad will the rubbing be? (example of the kind of info I'm looking for: it will slice the tire to shreds with out 20mm spacers) I did read the tire size/fitment post.
How much are the MR Bilstine shocks?
Thanks

get a 2005-2006 one. not much differences, 05-06 mivec /ac, turbo, tranny gearing.
don't bother the MR Bilstein ,fot that money or slightly more, you can have much better coilovers.

255 40 17 i have read is the largest size you can get on the stock wheel with no rubbing issues
You can fit 275/40-17 on the stock 17X8 rim if you're trying to run A-Stock in SCCA. That size tire is really too large, but it still works for running AS, and it won't rub because the tire is restricted by the small width of the rim. It bulges out over the edge, but it still fits without rubbing. That is the largest tire you can fit in AS.
I assume that's also why you're asking about the Bilsteins. They are a great upgrade for you in that class, and they usually go for about $600-800 used on here. I have mine for sale from my MR if you're interested.
As for the differences, they all have the front LSD and aluminum roof, the 05/06s have ACD and a larger exhaust housing on the turbo, and the 06s have an improved ECU + MIVEC + revised coolant passages in the head + larger compressor housing (lots more power) + shorter-ratio gearing. Your best bet would be an 06 IX RS w/275s and Bilsteins (or some other high-end shock) and a titanium cat-back. Again, that's assuming you're going for AS limits.

I run a 275/40/17 on a 19x9 +35mm offset with a 3mm spacer for clearing the front caliper.
I rub on the inner fender wells at full lock, on the rear trailing links (just enough to polish them, no visible marks on the tires) and a little bit on the rear fenders..
It's a very very tight fit. If I were to do a track day, I would recommend a smaller tire. for Autocrossing, the tire size works quite well where the rubbing issues dont' really concern me.
I might drive on the street with the big fatty tires, but I would not push it, and certainly would not try a track day where the rubbing issues could cause abnormal heating where you don't want it (like on the sidewalls)
IMHO, I don't know if your 17x9.5 +22mm offset will fit. It will certainly be close, I would watch the clearance on the rear trailing link and the front fender lip. Like others have said, you will need to run more negative camber in front and at least -1 degrees in back to clear the fender wells.

For all the model years, the RS has the same suspension as the GSRs. So the fitment issues are the same. I would forget about the stock rim size (17x8) and go with an aftermarket setup, like a 18x8, 18x8.5, or18x9. That would increase your overall track and tread width without having to go to such a large tire size on a stock rim with spacers.
Also for all model years, the RS has the aluminum hood, roof, and lightened steel sheetmetal like the MR.
In 2005 the RS has A/C as standard equipment, the ACD (Active Center Differential), and the larger 10.5 hotside turbo housing like the MR.
In 2006 it came with MIVEC like all of the other EVO models.
Happy hunting...

You guys aren't familiar with SCCA A-Stock rules, which don't allow you to run a larger wheel than stock, but you can run as much tire as you can fit without fender mods.
It's not useless. It's a stock class, so you have to remain near stock. There's only so much you can fit on a stock-sized rim with no fender mods, and people try to use the biggest tire possible.
