17x7's should fit fine with no rubbing if you go with 205/40/17 or 205/45/17 tires. 215's or 50's would be pushing it.

I've got 17s on my ride wrapped in 205/40s. That keeps your speedo almost the same as with stock tires (whalentire.com) which is always a plus.

And yes, you can just buy the wheels and tires and not worry about changing any suspension components.

Aside from inaccurate odometer reading, I think you'll end up messing up your transmission if you put different tire diameter than stock. Say you currently have a 195/60/15 tire and you changed to 215/45/17. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

We seem to be in the same page so what did you correct? You didnt mention anything about the transmission getting messed up or what not because of it's gear ratio made for the stock tires.

The fact that you won't have an inaccurate odometer if you go with 205/40. And you won't mess up your tranny just by changing the overall diameter of tires.

Your transmission will not be messed up with different overall wheel/tire diameter. What is slapped on your hubs doesnt affect your tranny.

Yes, the gearing will have changed, but it will not "mess up your transmission."
Yes, your speedo will be off by a few %

But to me, tire sizing is more about look, performance and pragmatism rather than accurate speedo readings =P
As for your odometer, well, deal =D

I have 17x7.5 et45 and i am worried about rubbing, because my car is pretty low. We will see, i may have to raise it *sob*

If going with a 17" on this vehicle, the best tire size to use is the 205/45-17. This size would not cause any rubbing issues if used with the correct wheel sizes. With this size, your speedo would be off by 1.5 mph at 50 mph, and 3 mph off at 100 mph. Either would not be noticeable. No transmission problems would occur as a result of using this size

Be prepared for worse fuel economy, worse braking, bumpy ride, and more expensive tires down the road. Oh, and look out for potholes, your new low profile tires won't like them much.

I'd say at least 50% of the members of this site that have regular lancers have 17-18" rims, no one ever complained about it... most people know what they are getting into before they buy it.. you don't have to lecture on the downside of everything.. I've seen 2 of your posts so far, and both have been the downside of what everyone is talking about.. if you dont like it that much, dont talk about it.. people know the ramafications of their actions... let them be

So is it wrong to point out to newbies of downsides of their possible modifications when it appears to me that most of them don't really know about the drawbacks of such modifications? I am not here to tell people that what they do to their cars is bad and that they should just leave it stock. I am merely pointing out to them what they may or may not know. Educating the others is a thankless job but please don't tell me to "don't talk about it".
