Warranty and Modding?
Warranty and Modding?
I'm sure others are in the same boat as I am and don't want to void the factory warranty just yet, since I just bought my car a week ago and want to get it way more broken in before I void it, maybe a year or so. Anyway, my dealers words were that sneezing on this car voids the warranty, meaning all modding voids it.
So maybe if people could list what they know for sure doesn't void the warranty. Or is this a dealer specific thing? Because my dealer said a flash even voids the warranty, and also an intake. He said they could see the software information, even though they can see the software can they tell if its flashed or changed from that, I wouldn't think the software would change with a flash unless its a mitsu flash.
If there is a post about this a link to it would help but I didn't see anything upon my few minutes of looking.
Thanks for your help guys and comments. I plan on doing a catback for sure because they said that was the only mod that I could do because the back-pressure isnt affected enough and its mainly for sound, even though people are seeing 20whp from catbacks, so I think i will do that for sure.
They also said changing from Mobil1 will void the warranty, I thought that was funny.

I wouldnt even do a cat back.
they can/will void the waranty for any mod, I've even seen warranty's in jepordy because of "exessive wear" of tires.
there's only one mod I would even consider for an X if you want to keep the waranty, and its this:

You ever heard about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act?
http://www.duramax.bizhosting.com/ma...s-warranty.htm
If they can show that the aftermarket part in question caused the problem then they can void the warranty.
So... if you put a tune on the car, then likely they won't warranty the engine, transmission, transfer case, etc. because of the excess power. If you tune and need these fixed, untune (put the stock ECU flash back on). BMWs can tell if they have been messed with, but so far nothing from Mitsu says they can tell.
Now if you flash and your seats split? Then they can't not cover it because of the flash.
You put coilovers and now your car rattles a lot? Probably not going to be covered.
The best defense? make friends with the dealer, service writer and techs. They do not have final say, but their support goes a long way. Antagonizing them will not be good for you
Also, make sure that you do all of the prescribed services, and I, personally, recommend having them done at the dealer (as long as the dealer doesn't suck horribly). That way, there is a history of the vehicle having regular services at the dealer. Just keep mum about things that you don't want them to know about. I'd be wary of posting things on the internet (tunes, HP numbers, track times, etc.) as those can come back to haunt you.
Or... just flaunt it and become well known, so if they screw you, you've got street cred to actually try and use

My dealer called the regional representative at Mitsubishi and asked if a catback was alright and they said it was, so catback is safe. I would like to know if the flash is alright and just what else we can do.

It's worth a try. With all your mods you will have a difficult time most likely, but they do need to prove it for sure in order to not respect the warranty. Worth a try if your leak is serious.
4B11... isnt exactly bulletproof as of yet.....
suckks for you new car warranty guys... never been in the possession of a new car so i really wouldnt be able to say anything..
but they do have a strict warranty though
as far as im concerned.. evos dont have a warrenty.... my buddy had a 9mr hes motor seized at 9k miles.... they would not cover it becuase of a framm oil filter.... lame.... if your worried about your warrenty... i would not mod or even look at your car funny.... like said before mitsu is waaayy strict on warrentys
i do have a good relationship with the service area of the dealership here but they said that whatever i replaced with an aftermarket part, then that part was voided. so if i put on an intake, then the stock intake warranty would be void. i currently have a turboback exhaust, manual boost controller, short throw shifter, intake, intercooler piping, and a bov and they will still warranty it. I also just had my buddy who is ASE certified put in an ACT 2900 clutch and they said that as long as it was done by a professional that it would still be warrantied. And yeah a tune or flash will void the warranty if they know that one has been done but here they dont know the difference between a stock fuel map and a leaner map. They did say though, any internal mod would void the engine warranty.
I only have one dealer here within 100 miles so after I bought my car I gave them a call with questions about the warranty. The guy I was talking to got real defensive after I told him I drive an Evo and that ANY mods or proof of abuse would void the warranty! Dude was a complete ***** about it and I was only asking about it!
I work at a Ford dealer as a tech so I know how this game is played. We take every car with a "case to case" approach. Attitude has a lot to do with it too, just don't demand that your car needs to be repaired under warranty when your dial in and track number are still on the car!! (seen it before)
Any time the "area rep" has to get involved you more than likely aren't going to win. These guys are often extreme by the book ****'s that will take any small out they can find so the company doesn't have to pay for it.
BTW my warranty was "voided" from a catback and a boost controller because it "sounds like it's raced"...now who would buy an Evo and plan on doing something like that huh?
