if you have the money. tinted windows could help on the heat coming in from the sun. Usually it can help lower the temperature in the car by 10 - 15 degrees.

I totally know what the OP means.

A couple of years ago, I posted about the "Blazing Shift Knob of DOOM!" to address this exact phenomenon. I was in the habit of using my Oakley bag to cover the shift knob during the day. And my windows are tinted, and I was using a sun shade as well --- no luck. The d@mn knob was still blazing hot. I even wondered if it wasn't collecting heat from the transmission tunnel, but that made no sense. In the end, even though you love the look of the stock knob, either learn to endure the pain, or go with an aftermarket alternative. Sucks, though!

i heard you shouldn't do that because you mash the gears together and cause transmission problems in the long run

I had the same issue. After a couple of years of "quick shifting" in the summer to avoid burns, I bought the RalliArt derlin knob as a replacement. It still gets warm, but it will not burn you in the summer.
