I totally know what the OP means.
A couple of years ago, I posted about the "Blazing Shift Knob of DOOM!" to address this exact phenomenon. I was in the habit of using my Oakley bag to cover the shift knob during the day. And my windows are tinted, and I was using a sun shade as well --- no luck. The d@mn knob was still blazing hot. I even wondered if it wasn't collecting heat from the transmission tunnel, but that made no sense. In the end, even though you love the look of the stock knob, either learn to endure the pain, or go with an aftermarket alternative. Sucks, though!

I had the same issue. After a couple of years of "quick shifting" in the summer to avoid burns, I bought the RalliArt derlin knob as a replacement. It still gets warm, but it will not burn you in the summer.
