little warning

i have loved evos for years and bought one in February its an evo 9 with some mods from the previous owner including a tune. So ive launched it a few times at an empty parking lot and its fast i used the two step so my buddys brother bought an s60r and wanted to see how my car launched so we went to the parking lot to show him. i did my usual set up raised my rpms slowly till it hit then sliped the clutch and it was a good launch then i went to shift to second and i hear boom. and cant shift have no rpms and roll to the e lot where my friend was waiting. i thought i blew my transfer case or even my clutch. black smoke cam out of my tailpipe a little bit and i was near tears. turn it off and started back up to try and get the minute down the road to my house and couldnt get above 1500 rpms. open my hood and it was only my intake pipe going into my throttle body thank god. after doing some research i found out under alot of boost the mesh pipe will flex creationg loss in airflow and shape enough to make it shoot of the throttle body. so a bit of advice to anyone thinking of draging their car for the first time with mods i would strongly advice buying hard upper intake piping better performance and no unexpected blow offs

This will probably get locked because it's pretty general knowledge about the pipes blowing off. I would take a guess a pretty high percentage has experienced this exact (or very similar) situation. I would suggest upgrading to T-Bolt clamps where necessary and any couplers that you might suspect don't create a good seal.

im sure it's happened to everyone at some point. put silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps and it should never happen again.

It's not a bad thing that you wanted to warn people about this situation happening. The wrong part is not taking a little bit of time to read up on your car. Probably a little bit of the basic information of "stuff that just happen" to Evos would include the pipes blowing off.

This info along with stuff like the high crankcase pressure that can cause the dip stick to blow out (this has happened to me on 2 different Evos) and the like can cause new owners BIG headaches. But a little reading and you'll know what to do to either deal with or avoid some of these potentially annoying (or expensive if you blow out your dip stick and lose too much oil...) issues that make Evos Evos.

Not trying to sound like a dick at all. Just when you post information that has been covered a lot then some people WILL get annoyed. My advice is to just do some reading on stuff Evos are known for. And I'm not talking about their killer performance. Like dash rattles, HVAC knobs sticking and/or breaking, faded clear on wing, chipping/fading brake calipers, crappy paint, etc. I'm sure there is a whole wealth of knowledge of things to keep your eye out for on this site. Good luck with the car .

Sometimes i cannot believe the amount of effort in this forum that people take to NAG and NAG and criticise and tell someone ALL about everything they're doing wrong. This was a very simple thread, and could have ended with this response:

Thanks for the warning! Yes, that's a very common thing to happen on Evos - Here's what people do to fix it:........

What was he supposed to search anyway? "What things just 'Happen' to Evos?"

Come on guys - Instead of taking an extra 4 minutes to blab on about what he should've done, go make yourself a grilled cheese sandwich.

Don't feel bad man I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday on my way to work and I felt sick as soon as it happend, I tought I blew the motor. Fortunately, all I did was open the hood and I realized right away what it was. I've been a member of Evom for several months now and I never once read or heard anything about this. Today I went out and tightened just about every coupler clamp that I could find. I did some researching last night and I'm probably going to upgrade to silicone couplers in the near future.

Thanks for saying something bro cuz that's exactly how I felt when I read the other posts. I'm still pretty new and even when I tried to do a search on this I didn't come up with a whole wealth of knowledge like people said and I had to try typing the problem in like three different ways cuz there's a number of ways that you could title this problem.
