Should I choose a EVO or STI?
I would half agree for sure. I have nothing against the sti, but I'd rather have an iron block (Evo) than an aluminum one (Sti). I'm comparing the strengths of each motor from what I've seen personally. Meaning which has run higher boost levels on a stock motor and which tends to blow up. You're right though, if both are fully built, like forged internals and stuff, then strength is in the eye of the builder..
Have you guys ever stopped to consider that maybe it's the parts or more likely the builder that is the issue? I know of a few people that have built motors that don't have any issues, the car's run extremely well. They also had the cars built by one of the best shops in western Canada. If you're only lightly modding the car, which the OP said he was, it could be argued that the STI is a better choice power wise as AMS showed better results with their STI for less money and less mods than what would be expected from an Evo.

This isn't a "the STI is better than the Evo" post, it's a "the STI isn't the POS people want to make it out to be" post.

Something to keep in mind, the STI and it's North American motor has not been around nearly as long as the 4G63 used in the previous Evos. The Subaru motor is also more finicky in the sense that it doesn't like knock at all. If you have a knock prone tune, the motor won't last long. If you have a good tune, you can easily push 350 WHP if not higher. 400 WTQ isn't out of the question on a stock block.
The fact the 4g63 has been around forever is another reason I chose the Evo because its proven and it seems they've kept it for a reason. Same reason I don't trust the 4b11 in the new Evo Xs...
Evo ix all the way, i was stuck in this same position a few months ago, drove 05 - 08 sti's and didn't really get the same feeling out of them as i did the evo. The first time i drove the evo i knew i had to buy it, it was just so much more precise , gets into boost earlier, just feels better.
So what I am getting in this thread is that there is a claim on crapy motor builds? I had my 2nd motor built by a very good shop in my old 06 sti. Just go on nasioc and you will see a lot of people that have blown motors on there and struggling to barely hit 300whp.
There are a lot of major flaws in the ej257. First off its aluminum and if you actually see a bare shortblock, the cylinder lining is so thin its ridiculous. It really can't handle more than 24 psi. Second, the #4 ringland always goes out, the design of the fuel system is crapy, the fuel line goes to injector #1, #2, #3, #4, so by the time it gets to the last injector, it runs leaner than the others. Third, the oil pick up tube in the oil pan is so weak even going over a pothole can crack it causing you to lose your oil pressure. Fourth, have fun adding oil to it all the time, the engines seem to go thru oil like no other and it doesn't seem to get circulated thru the motor adequtely

go test drive em both and see which you like better. but if you're looking for all out performance go with the evo hands down. otherwise you cant lose with either choice. both have problems cuz we've all "heard about this guy who blew his motor" with either car...
Of course there have been blown motors with either car . But with the subaru's its overwhelleming. I am on nasioc and there are so many threads about it that it isn't even funny anymore. Some people have tried to start petitions to send to SOA(Subaru of America) to take care off all of the engine defects because even bone stock people with no mod's whatsoever have blown their motors

i dont know much about the 8s or 9s but from what i hear the 4G63 is a friggin beast. ive heard a few blown 4b11 stories and they've got their handful of problems of their own. but, frequenting enthusiast forums where people are gonna drive the hell out of these cars and also mod the hell out of them you're going to see more of these problems.
i used to own an 04 sti and i absolutely loved that car and never had ANY problems besides the annoying strut clunk, and so far my X hasnt had any hardcore problems just annoyances (knocking on wood).
my 04 sti didnt feel nearly as competent handling wise as my X but i do miss the suby community, and the personality and presence that comes with that suby boxer rumble. OP pick one and never look back and you will be happy.
...what years are you looking at btw?
