Should I choose a EVO or STI?
So what I am getting in this thread is that there is a claim on crapy motor builds? I had my 2nd motor built by a very good shop in my old 06 sti. Just go on nasioc and you will see a lot of people that have blown motors on there and struggling to barely hit 300whp.
There are a lot of major flaws in the ej257. First off its aluminum and if you actually see a bare shortblock, the cylinder lining is so thin its ridiculous. It really can't handle more than 24 psi. Second, the #4 ringland always goes out, the design of the fuel system is crapy, the fuel line goes to injector #1, #2, #3, #4, so by the time it gets to the last injector, it runs leaner than the others. Third, the oil pick up tube in the oil pan is so weak even going over a pothole can crack it causing you to lose your oil pressure. Fourth, have fun adding oil to it all the time, the engines seem to go thru oil like no other and it doesn't seem to get circulated thru the motor adequtely

There's nothing wrong with aluminum blocks, the new Evo X has an aluminum block, you just have to be smart.
So far I know of no one personally that has experienced any of the problems you speak of. Horror stories are present on all forums, NASIOC just appears to have more since it's a massive forum.
What it boils down to is personal preference, do you like Coke or Pepsi? I find it funny that people bring up Top Gear when the hosts of Top Gear openly admitted that they preferred the STI to the Evo even though they couldn't quantify why. For the most part, the arguments are those of extremes under the assumption that you'll be wanting the most power possible. If the OP only wants a lightly modded daily driver, both cars are more than adequate.

I don't see how that's a logical argument, that's like saying since I'll never personally own a Flamingo or an Eagle that my opinion on which I would want to own is not relevant. These are supposedly professional (I use that term loosely) automotive reviewers. If they were to own one, in previous cases (before the 08 STI and the Evo X), they'd buy the STI. The Evo does outperform the STI but it isn't exactly by a huge margin in terms of the qualities most people would care about and within most people's abilities. It really does boil down to personal preference.
I don't think I got my point across correctly: in all comparisons Top Gear has done they've always stated that for a track car, Evo. For a comfort car, STi. Until the newest versions of both....and by their testing the Evo blows the STi away......
I completely agree with you on personal prefrence. I own an A4 in adition to my Evo; and because of that in my opinion the Evo's interior is just flat out junk. Does that mean I prefer my A4 OVER my Evo? **** no it doesn't!!!!!!
The Evo is a better stop light killer than the STi. The Evo is a better dragstrip car than the STi. The Evo is a better road track car than the STi (subi understeer is insane). The Evo is cheaper to modify and make faster.
Me personally? Those are the MOST important things to think about when buying cars in this category. Not how easy will it be to go grocery shopping with it or wondering which one has the better stereo system or warranty.
But again; that's just MY opinion.....

According to the Top Gear lap wall, the new STI is faster than the Evo. During the review, they did not use a stock or equally powered Evo as a comparison, I believe they used an FQ360. They used an FQ300 for the lap time though.
AMS had a very nice on track comparison between the STI and the Evo. They liked a few aspects of the Subaru. One thing the Subaru has is great torque as a result of its larger displacement and smaller turbo. In the right hands, the understeering of the STI is manageable. I really doubt the average, unbiased individual would notice a dramatic difference between the two, both the Evo and the STI are still more capable than most drivers, ie. most drivers will not exceed the capabilities of either vehicle. I agree that if you're going for a big build, the Evo is the obvious choice but for light modification, it's splitting hairs. The STI makes comparable power with comparable mods if we're talking about basic things like exhaust, tune, etc.
i've driven and tracked both and while i agree the evo is a faster better handling car i feel as though the STi had stronger acceleration coming out of turns and i must admit i love that subie rumble.
I have been doing a lot of research and seems like the evo kicks the sti's *** in the performance department. The only thing is that it cost more than sti in my area.
Which car is easier to work on if something goes wrong?
This will be my DD and fun car, so reliability is VERY important.
Please convince me to get the evo.

The STI has better utility (hatch), and a nicer interior.
If the Evos cost too much in your area, drive down to Costa Mesa and you can get one for less than invoice at South Coast Mitsubishi.
Good luck in your search!
the handling and understeer of the sti is caused by the crappy alignment from the factory. give it a good alignment and the understeer goes away. my sti was actually far more tail happy than my evo.
I have been working Mits. since 1984, I just picked up an 2003 EVO 8 for my daily driver. Believe me not much goes wrong with the EVO or I would not get one. All the STI that got traded in,have coolant leaking from the head gasket. Get one that have been taken care off and not too mod. Evo will get you 200k miles plus. Plus the EVO will turn heads more.

That is bull****, I never have seen coolant leak on STI's dont spread bull****. Sti is a Daily driver and fun, Evo is more built for track/drag in my option and fun.
