Question about over revving

Hi, I've already searched, but nothing specific has come up about my situation. I know that going to rev limit is not the most efficient way to do things, and that high rpms are bad for all moving parts in your engine. I know that some people believe that the 4g63 can take that kind of abuse, but thats not what I'm here to discuss:

I accidently went into redline in 1st gear for the first time ever . I was boosting and as I was going to shift into 2nd, the car made a loud noise. I wouldn't say it was a loud bang, maybe more of a loud bump. Sounded like something heavy fell over in the trunk, but maybe originated from the engine bay. I'm not smoking, so I know I didn't blow the headgasket. I'm not experiencing any bogging, choking, or stuttering. Start up is normal, and the car ran normally immediately after that. I feel a little paranoid in saying I may be boosting a little later than normal, and the car smells maybe little rich perhaps after a good drive (meaning i'm not granny shifting the rpms, but shifting at around 6k).

I checked the engine bay, and no hoses have seem to come unattached. I'm just wondering what was the source of that strange noise?

I should mention that the car has a full Bushur HTA 35R kit on it, AEM EMS (tuned at 91 octane), 255 Walbro fuel pump, 720cc injectors, and a Bushur IC kit, HKS 272 cams, manual boost controller. Exhaust temps haven't changed, Boost gauge doesn't seem to show anything too out of the ordinary. No engine lights.

Is your car stock? How high did it rev? You probably just bounced off the rev limiter.

I'd say he bounced off the rev limiter as well.

Probably a bit of back fire from hitting the rev limiter.

I'm pretty sure it went a little bit beyond 7, but maybe you're right. There hasn't been any other obvious issues. The head and block are stock.

Did the sound happen before or after you shifted to 2nd? It could be the thump in the drive-train from a hard shift if it happened as you were engaging 2nd...

You have another vote for it being very likely that you hit the rev limiter.

If the noise came as you shifted 2nd and it was a fast hard shift to second and you got a loud clunk almost sounding like someone punching the trunk... your fine.. its one of the bushings in the rear.. if you upgrade to an aftermarket it will not do that... i forgot the name of the bushing though

I'm pretty positive it came right before the shift into 2nd. Thanks for all the quick responses, I was a little freaked out about it, still got the new buyer paranoia :-P

So rear bushing or rev limiter. That's pretty solid, the cars been driving fast, I was worried about the boost, but I haven't been pushing it at WOT so that probably fed into my fears. Thanks a lot guys!

Has it happened again? How much boost are you running?

try checking your cam gears, if you have aftermarket gears like "vishnu" cam gears they tend to start cracking
