NEW ENGINE!!! NEW NOISES!!! argh

So i just got back my ix mr with a brand new engine, oil pump, hoses and gaskets. awesome. I have got a lot of different pointers on breaking in the engine so i kinda combined them. The first 20 miles I did drive it kinda hard. I had boost at around 10psi and never shifted above 4500 rpms tho.

After that i drove it normally but never kept it at a steady rpm. I kept shifting so much. I'm at 201 miles right now and i have shifted so much in those miles than ever in my life. lolz

around 100 miles tho i was taking off on an exit and decided to shift a little harder than normal so i shifted at around 5000 rpms 3,4,5. each time i heard a weird *thump, thump* with each shift.

thats not really a problem as thats not happening very much now. What is a problem is that every time im in gear and i slow down, when i'm at 3000 rpms a sound comes out of the engine bay. It sounds like somethings loose. It reminded me of an empty tin can being thrown around in there.

This bothers me but it only happens around 3000 rpms and only when i let off the gas and let it drop down to that.

Please help and thanks

ps. mods are exedy stage 1 clutch kit ~1000 miles
turbo xs bov
tbe
These noises were never there before the engine change

I'm not sure that driving your car hard with less than 200 miles was too great for your engine... I've never heard of driving your car kinda hard for a break in, I've only heard to baby it for the first 500-1000 miles. But as to your problem with the noise I would baby the car for the next couple hundred miles and see if it goes away, you could've done something to your engine by driving hard though..

Can always start with the easy fixs, like maybe a loose heat shield. Judging by the noise on decel, could be that.

Does your new engine come with balance shafts removed?
Mine (2.3L without the shafts) has somewhat of a harmonic/vibration at about 3K RPM.

i still have the balance shafts and the noise is still there. I talked to my friend who is a genius about cars (also the person who fixed my baby) said it might be the wastegate hitting something so im gonna have it checked on weds. as far as the noise goes, it does sound like something loose. engine is fine and strong. so win on that.

ill check the heat shield tomorrow. i hope its that. easy fix. again, any other advice on loose parts after engine swap would be awesome. thanks again

Take your hood off and drive a round a bit. Maybe you'll hear the sound better.

hopefully something has just come loose and the engine rumble more at that rpm causing whatever it is to vibrate, but who knows
