its pretty sad to base your life off a car..if you want to go to college then do so you will receive a degree which is with you for life and will open doors left and right, if you want to serve the country and actually DO IT not just for the car then do so, military will give you discipline, strength, education and money BUT education its not the same as the college/universtity level. SO dont worry about the car, but worry about the long life, because cars come and go

He isnt just doing it for the car. He actually wants to serve his country amongst other things. Just one car he happens to want, he would like to know if he can afford. No harm being done here.
Check it out OP. Military has its ups and downs okay. You have free medical/dental/food/shelter. You have a guaranteed paycheck, and many opportunities to advance in rank and take on greater responsibility. The military will make a man out of you if you want it to. You learn alot while you serve, and you can go to college for free. You get your GI bill, and you get the option to do the school op when you reenlist. Many ways to get educated in the military. If and when you become a family man, they will be taken care of as well. Expect to work long hours, deal with good and bad leadership. Expect to endure very stressful days, and your mind and body will be put to the test each day.

Outside the military, you can go to school and work on your other plan. It is good that you are thinking about what you want to do with your life, rather then right before graduation where you end up having to make a quick decision to make ends meet. Thats what I did, luckily I love my job, and I am great at it. If you have any questions, feel free to pm me. I know alot about the military. I am a Platoon Sergeant, and the son of a Brigade CSM. I learn alot from my father, and implement it down. Feel free to pm me. Everyone here has given you a bit of good information. Dont take any of it the wrong way. Everyone deserves to be heard and has an opinion. And it is awesome for them to take a quick time out to offer you some advice. Good luck buddy.

You seriously just inspired me to join the military! Im seriously interested! if i get my evo or not... i can eventually afford it... ANOTHER big reason why i just made up my decision to go to the military is because one of my best friends had a down spiraling life and hes 18 no high diploma and 0 CREDITS!! But he sent himself to a boot camp were he can get his GED and i have been mailing him letters and he is truely a better person! and that really inspires me to join now! So thank you for helping me in my life decision, I AM joining the military thanks to you! Ill pm you about some other things...

This guy hit it on the head.

It all depends on how good you are with money.
As far as my case with my car, I am a SrA (E-4) with a 2010 Evo X. Married with a kid, and I have enough breathing room financially to live comfortably. About to get a fam car with the SRB (those help alot).

But good luck, you def. should NOT join the military just for a car though. Work hard and focus and nice things will come along the way.

keep in mind that they will have health/dental care. You will have the option (most of the time) to live on post/base housing at the cost of your housing allowance (which you were sacrificing already living in the barracks). Think you will get your BAS. It's hard to feed your family off of the BAH alone..which means that you will dip into your pay.

This is under the assumption that your wife doesn't have a job too, which the military practically demands of its spouses (granted there are exceptions such as the Coast Guard or the Air Force, but most military branches will move your family every 2-4 years.) Even spouses with Master's degrees can't get jobs because you are moved so often.

Just keep that in mind if you decide to go into the military, meet that nice girl you want to marry and think 'o man we will be a dual income family'. It's getting hard in the civilian world to get cashier positions sometimes.

I praise you, not many e-4's can say that. Does your wife work or do you live off e4 pay? I have a SFC in my shop that has 5 kids, bought a 2500 sq ft home and still saves money to pay for a paint job on the house in cash and do home improvements cash. there are some smart Soldiers/Airmen/Seamen?! out there. It makes me happy as an officer to see that. I try and mentor so many junior enlisted to no success.

Wife stays home with the kid. So I am the only income.
Saved alot of BAH during boot camp and tech school and got my house fully furnished with everything paid off ( I live on base). So I have no credit cards or major bills. Good credit and a budget plan allowed me to get the X.
It's def. possible and many people are in many different situations for oppurtunities.

First off let me thank you for considering joining the military. I'm currently in a delayed entry program and leave for basic in February (Navy). I'm going in for nuclear propulsion which is a very specialized field. I had ROTC in high school so I go in as an E-3 and because of my field I get advanced to E-4 after A school and I'll be E-6 or E-7 after the rest of my schooling (2 years total for nuclear). With that said I'm 25 and just going in. I have an associates in automotive tech and was going for a degree in international business and they cut my departement and I'm left SOL. Hence the Navy. Just saying your not even safe in school nowadays.

I don't actually think you get a signing bonus now unless your going into a specialized field. I can get up to 15k bonus depending on how I do on my final test to qualify for the nuclear program. I know they offer this for EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) and SEALs as well. SSG_petty pretty much said everything there is to say. If you go career in the Military you'll be set for life and your family will be too. Not to mention you can retire after 25-30 years with a nice pension and still work in the civilian field. You may have to wait some time to advance in rank to afford a X. I'm looking at buying one after basic and A school, but I'll also have 7k down. If it weren't for that I wouldn't be able to afford it.

Its all about managing your money. Some soldiers end up having a hard time making it with a family. Those I know of are complete idiots. Some of these special guys belong to me. Just have to know what you want, and know how to budget. I am an E6, I own a home, have two young kids who are growing and very expensive, many bills, and wife is doing school but no work. We just know how to budget so we dont live paycheck to paycheck. BAH and BAS helps alot. Depending on other things that are not needed may cause you to have to dip into your check. You are right. Again that is where self discipline comes into play. Hopefully if he has issues, he will have caring NCO's that will help him out.

OP, I am glad I helped you out in your decision, but DO NOT RUSH IT. Join for all the right reasons buddy. It isnt something that happens over night. There are days where I wish I could just quit the Army, but I do this for a reason. My wife and two kids. Screw the cars, screw the nice things I own. My family has to eat period. Takes a strong man to deal with what we deal with. If you have will and power, there is no doubt in my mind you can make it happen. Think long and hard about it. And make sure you include your parents. Ask them how they feel about you wanting to join the military.

AND REMEMBER, NCO'S TRAIN THE OFFICERS HAHAHA. Thats for you ravnos04 lol.

I never heard of advancing in rank because of your MOS. I think the recruiter got the best of you. But that's Navy, what do I know? LMAO
