back firing problems?

a friend of mine came with me and basically said your car feels slower... i agreed. idk if it engine based or maybe my turbo is going? evo 8 turbo never changed with 84k on it 26psi is the highest i boosted at
to check for shaft play, pull your intake pipe off the inlet and use your finger and try to move the shaft up and down and in and out.
to do a boost leak test. search on here to figure out how to make the connector. but basically your going to put the connector on the turbo inlet, fill it up with air to pressurize the system, and listen for leaks

do you think its the turbo or do you think its the engine? engine was backfiring before i lowered the boost and now even if i go to raise the boost on the boost controller it wont go up.
