Question what oil do you use to prevent lifters from ticking?

im currently using mobil 1 full syn 10w-30 in my cammed out built 2.0L
and i hear the lifters ticking on idle
i have heard that using different viscosity oil helps prevent this problem
has anybody had the same issue that was solved by changing the oil??
thanks

Switching from Mobile 1 to Amsoil SSO 0W30 quieted things down in my Evo. I had very faint lifter tick prior to my cam install. I switched to Amsoil and it was surprisingly gone. Proceeded to do the cam swap and drop the "no-tick lifters" in, along with Amsoil again. My Evo is quiet as can be, well except for the lope of the cams that are audible through the exhaust (haha). Can't go wrong with Amsoil. Good luck.

glad to hear the SSO 0W30 did what it was supposed to do, its not suprising though SSO would do this plus the lubrication its providing it very good for your engine

thanks for the replies
you are not mixing it with anything right? just pure SSO 0W30.
did you try 5W30 or 10W30? does it make a difference?

nop AMSOIL does not like mixing fluids, if the fluid is not capable of performing by itself then you need a better fluid.

For cold weather thinner is better

theres a how to in the how to section.search around for it and you will find it.

at first start up after bleeding them they will tick extremely loud. after a few min of idle and drive time they will fill back up with oil and all the ticking will be gone.

Both myself and an Evo 8 owner, Jeremy, had some lifter tick, he switched from Mobil to Castrol and it quieted it down, I switched to Royal Purple 10W-40 and it went away completely.

royal purple isnt too expensive. maybe like 7$ a qt i think. but just an fyi, everyone here thinks RP is garbage and i have to agree. buddy ran it for several thousand miles in his truck. we removed the valve covers one day to check everything out and the oil gunked up his motor. it collected all over the covers. it was literally like 1/4 inch build up of gunk. took a scraper and some time to remove the layers of build up.

trust me, bleed your lifters and use some amsoil. your valve train will sound so smooth with out ticking. maybe add some cams and/or valve springs while you are in there

Switching from M1 10W-30 to M1 0W-40 made my lifter tick go away.

Edit: Not comparing M1 0W-40 to Amsoil 0W-30. Just agreeing that 0W flows best on cold starts.
