EVO 8 Wing gone bad
EVO 8 Wing gone bad
My 2003 evo 8 carbon fiber wing has gone bad, the carbon fiber is getting really
bad, getting/looking as white spots from the sun UV rays. I live close to the Dallas
area. Any ideas where i can take it to take it to fix it.

I was told the same, but honestly, i am afraid if i do it myself i probably end up messing it up, I'd rather take it to someone who has done it before. But i don't know anyone in Dallas.
^^^I'm with you...my wing has the same thing going on. But i'd hate to make it look worse with my painting/sanding skillz. haha
I've had the wing on my evo replaced 3 times (under warrent). The last wing that was intalled has lasted the longest and the only thing I have done different is not wax it. I have actually been told by a nother evo owner that if you have the wing waxed it must be done with a high speed buffer.
Look/ask in the ntec subforum. I can't remember the name but there is a place in Dallas that has a good reputation with the North Texas Evo Club.

When I sanded mine down I was also afraid that I would mess it up. It turned out great and after I sanded it, it was nice and smooth. Only problem was I still haven't gotten around to re-clear coating it even though I have the clear coat. Its peeling again so I'll be sanding it soon and clear coating it.
Also, hac, you should come join NTEC if you haven't already.
If your paint skills are as bad as mine, doing it yourself is a baddd idea haha.
I only went to one body shop, and It's a fairly expensive one, and they told me that it would be $150 using the most expensive clear coat that they have.

I think a lot of the problems with this wing are the resin type used and the process to manufacture the composite. I would hope Mitsu used an epoxy resin system to cure the carbon as epoxies tend to have better resistance to uv, chemicals, and oxidation than other resin systems (polyester, vinylester). If they used a cheaper polyester resin, it may likely keep peeling away and further sanding could reach the fibers and start affecting the structural properties of the flat panel section of the wing.
Also, bubbling in the carbon fiber could be a manufacturing defect. If they use a process known as infusion to make the wing, vacuum is used to transfer resin into the carbon fiber. If the vacuum is allowed to pull air in between pulling resin in, bubbles can be trapped in the carbon fiber laminate.
I think taking it to someone who has experience repairing/working with carbon fiber could offer a long term solution. Then again, there may be more low cost solutions out there. Been reading these boards for awhile and people here are very resourceful. Ok, done nerding out.
