parents are saying mitsubishi is bad[HELP]
Yeah, because this kid is buying a built Si. If he's getting a used Evo for a certain price I doubt he's going to be dumping thousands into his Si that his PARENTS bought him. I read his Si post with clarity and understanding. However, comparing a built Si (which is likely not to happen for this kid) to a stock Evo (just barely in his budget considering he's looking at 2003's with 70k miles) is not applicable to the op's concerns.
Thus stock for stock a K20 Si (newer car) is going to run him about the same as a 2003 evo (older car) and leave him with no money for modifications.

To be honest dude I'm 19 and just got my evo.. worked for it and bought it strait cash. I'd really suggest you get something that you can learn how to drive in and enjoy at the same time and once you get that experience you'll appreciate your evo 10x more. I know how you feel.. evo was my dream car too and wanted it really bad. I used to own an rsx type s for my first car and it was a great car to learn in. You can't say you wont do dumb sh*t in an evo because everyone on here that owns one doesn't just granny shift to 2500 and occasionally get the speed to 65 its just not gonna happen. Evo's are a expensive with maintenance. But anyways after 3 years in my rsx and doing minor stuff I made the leap to an evo and its a better route to drive something a little slower than learning in an evo.
I bought a Ralliart when I was 16, put money into it and when I had the money for an evo I bought one. I say you do the same. I loved my Ralliart, handles amazing for an inexpencive car. Not all that fast but fun and still a Lancer. The Evo can definitely be dangerous. It's so easy to get all the confidence in the world. I've scared the **** out of myself too many times
I probably would have killed myself at 16 with this car. **** I almost killed myself a few times even in a ralliart haha
BTW The Ralliart is a reliable car I can assure you. I beat the living hell out of mine every single day for 2 1/2 years without ever having a problem. Wouldn't accelerate EVER without being completely pinned (lived in the middle of nowhere then) I swear I couldn't kill it

I have a IX sitting at home in the garage and I daily drive my OZ Rally (I want to replace the OZ with a Ralliart or a 99' or 01' Integra type r).
I have gone through a handful of cars and I am only 22 years old. One of the funnest cars that I had was a 1994 Civic Si. It was swapped with a strong motor, full suspension, full bolt ons, tuned on S300, it was such a fun car and way way cheaper to maintain and modify than the Evo. I sold it and kind of wish I had it as a daily now lol.
If I had gotten my Evo at age 16, Im sure it would have been wrecked pretty bad. Its not like you get in it and you're magically a pro driver. The car doesn't fix driver error just because its AWD. Some mistakes make behind the wheel of an AWD car are much harder to control to an inexperienced (less seat time) driver.
Civic Si is a great car. I sold my built 2007 FA5[4 door] in August. In 3rd gear, it would easily walk an Evo X. They are lighter and get better fuel economy than the Evo does. Getting a 4 door over the 2 door will generally be cheaper on insurance, at least that is what the younger guys were saying on 8th Gen Civic. Also, the K20 is extremely responsive to mods. There is an enormous amount of aftermarket support out there whether turbos, superchargers, cams, intakes, headers, exhausts etc. This would also be a great car to drive until you can afford an Evo...

the si is a nice car for what it is believe me...but honestly my old type r was a better car than the newer si's..
I didn't read through the entire thread... But here are my .02 cents.
Don't stress too much about your first car. If they are paying for it, get what THEY want for you.
Trust me, time flies, and your first car is nothing more than a learning experience. Before you know it, it'll be over.
My dad had a good job and made good money back when I was 16 (Over 15 years ago). He didn't want to deal with broken down cars. So, he bought me a brand new Mitsubishi. Guess what? I put a lot of money into it and then wrecked it - a couple of times. I did learn a lot, but to this day I wish I hadn't spent the money I did on modding it.
Also, the fact that my very first car was a new one, was not right. Now, I'm adverse to buying used and that costs me money. Good and bad there, but I sometimes think my dad should've bought a used one for me as a learning experience.
When my son is old enough, I'll buy him a slow, but cool, safe used car. I think that's the best a teenager should have. Cars are dangerous. It's important that you live past your first car, so that you can enjoy fast cars later on.

That is the sad thing with kids today. When I was old enough to drive my parents told me if you want a car get a job and buy your own. WTF is wrong with parents buying there kids 40k cars for there first cars anyway.
get a early 60's beetle. cheap to fix good car to learn with and when stock they have no get up and go. they can be fast tho fairly cheap and the later models 70s can be made to corner well.
didn't read through the thread but why don't you man up and buy a car your self.
if your parents are paying for a car shut up and be grateful your getting a free car.
no I'm not an old fart, I bought my evo @ 19
free is free take what they give you and thank them.

im sorry but i havent read all the pages. But i do understand where the op parents are coming from. mitsubishi in my opinion is a car that isnt so great in terms of reliability. at least the galants and others. i have seen and experianced this. It comes down to comparison of normal cars like honda toyota nissan subaru basically the top jap brands. mitsubishi is probably rated lowest on reliability and how the car holds up. but in reality the reason for this, i think but not sure, is that mitsubishi's cars sold in usa are made in usa. but the evolution if i remember correctly is made by mitshubishi in japan and is imported over so quality control is higher. i mean we all know how the majority of union workers are since the cant get fired easily. but still cars are cars and logic applies.
i just got my car back from getting rebuilt motor is built and is nice and good with a new turbo kit. but the shopped that put the motor back in the car i dont think is so great of a worker. basically when car is done there were some loose parts the wastegate moving and started to rub on radiator. they coulda made sure it was tight like it should be. 2nd i found a oil leak on the fitting on the turbo. now i wonder what else wasnt tight as it should be. parts on the car is fine just the quality and care of the work put in of usa workers and japan workers is different. thats is why majority of jap cars are more reliable than usa made cars. Basically the union workers dont care much cause they wont get fired, changes the quality of the car and reliability. If i had not seen that oil leak i would run out of oil and result in spun bearings and other **** on a newly rebuilt motor.

Mitsubishi isn't exactly known for their stellar reliability but it's getting better. As it should, just like every major manufacturer, since the technology/methods are there and today's customers demand it more so than ever before. With that being said, my 2003 evo is more reliable than my mom's 2002 CR-V. The couple of things that went awry were the typical faded calipers and a broken temp control knob. So I really wouldn't worry about reliability if you maintain like you're supposed to and pray to the 3-diamond gods. Also, don't forget that every car is different. There's supposed to be a standard, but this is real life. That's why you are given a warranty just in case. Obviously, this doesn't apply to your situation.
GL to you. Just be grateful your parents are willing to fork over money for your ride. Regardless what vehicle it may be, don't thank them by wrapping it around a tree.
