i want torque. What should i do?

ok so i dont own an evo yet but i want one. I have owned a lot of cars, my last one being a fully built sti. I am mainly looking for a used evo x that is reasonable. So my question is what one should i get if i want to mainly focus on drivable torque and some higher hp numbers. I have read that the gsr can take a good amount of abuse with the 5 speed. But i have also seen the mr hold a good amount of torque but tuning wise they seem to lay off of the higher tq that the gsr's make. Im not looking to go as crazy as I did with the sti, but i do want to set my self up with the best building blocks.

Now the car is only going to be a fun daily driver so nothing crazy like i said. With that being said i have talked to a friend that has a built evo 9 and a daily driven stage 2 evo x mr and he said the mr should be fine but he replaced his tranny already with just ams stage 2. So im kind of up in the air. He said it could have been a fluke but it worries me.

I have driven both and i like the mr better for daily driving, but i dont mind cruising in 5th gear either if it means a stronger car. Any help is cool. I know im a evo noob but im trying to learn.

Well, basically if you like the MR, then get the MR. If you like driving a manual then the gsr is your option, by the time you reach torque limits on the MR you will have reached the limits on the stock block first. Its that simple.

You say you want torque?

How do you feel about lag?

Add an intake restrictor and crank up the boost.

If you don't like lag but don't mind being illegal then..

Intake restrictor, crank the boost and add anti lag

DIY Rally car haha

Just messing with ya, although if you want torque, it's generally correlated with horsepower!

The MR is faster in most situations just because you'll never shift that fast. It's also more comfortable for DDing. It also has built in launch control.

The only downside to the MR is the possibility of needing to build the tranny if you go over ~400 WTQ

^^^ Can't argue with any of those points, but it is all preference. I would rather have my GSR and DD it..

I think if you just get a GSR, but the normal bolt-ons + an EF2 you would have the power you are looking for. I would not take the SST tranny over 360ish wtq just to be on the safe side.. A $10k transmission is nothing to take lightly. The GSR tranny can see more power than that safely. The stock 4B11 block would prolly only handle around 370wtq and be reliable though.. People hit higher numbers, but once you start going this high on the stock block it will only be a matter of time.. That much torque can do a number on engine parts. :P

damn. I guess the smaller displacement isnt going to allow me to get that down low freeway ramp and spirited driving sprints im looking for.

I hate lag by the way. No matter what i do im sticking with stock turbo.

This is the point of the stock appearing turbo's, as mentioned an EF2/FP Green/BBK Full will all be very close in spool compared to stock turbo and will provide more hp/tq over all. Just something to consider

i have considered it, but it seems very expensive. I would like to buy a stock car or as close to stock as possible. The cars for sale on this forum are all tooled on way to much for me to be comfortable buying one.

But if going with a bigger turbo is the only way to really up the tq numbers to what i would like, then i dont know if this is the car for me.

My other question is, my good friend that has the built 9 and the daily evox before he went crazy on the 9 he had a stock turbo with cams. I drove with him in that thing and that was what i was looking for in my sti. That was a fun car to drive in. Never drove it but man it was fun. Way more fun then my built sti. So would adding some cams to the stock turbo negate needing a bigger turbo from map, fp, or card.

Totally understandable. To answer your question about cams, absolutely! Cams, exhaust, intake, fuel pump, fmic/piping, professional tune will make the car be substantially better and feel way more responsive!! Those mods alone make the car a totally different beast!
