Is the SST an automatic or how would you classify it?
It depends on who you're talking to. Mechanically, it's more similar to a manual transmission in that it has layshafts and clutches, rather than fluid couplings and planetary gearsets. In terms of the control layout, it's identical to an automatic transmission.
Car and Driver calls these gearboxes 'automanuals', which are manual transmissions with robotic control for the clutch. The tiptronic style gearboxes are 'manumatics', which are automatic transmissions with manual overrides.
But these days dual clutch gearboxes are becoming more commonplace, so I'd call it an automatic, just one without the downsides of a conventional box.
