Trade Evo X for the new 400hp Golf?
I bit the bullet and jumped ship to the new Golf R Mk7.
1 test drive is all it took, it is better than the Mk6 R in every way. Performance is close to the EVO, but a much better drive for a daily and the interior is no comparison. The torque band makes all the difference imo.
Evo is still the better track car but not by as much as people think.
Stage 1 piggback tunes on the 7 R are already hitting figures of 350HP / 470Nm without any mods.

I will say it gets annoying when people buy Evo's and ***** about the interior and the cost etc etc etc.

Ive had my eye on that golf for awhile. There are definite upsides to switching but I just love the inexpensive everything on my evo compared to what I've paid in the past for my German cars with similar problems.
It also gets annoying when you spend 40k on a car with an interior no better than a 20k car. Its not as if they couldn't be great performance cars AND have a nice interior for 40k. That is what is frustrating about it.
I imagine that if they brought the Golf R400 to the states, it would have 4 doors like the regular Golf R.
Regarding Price: People are already spending $60k on 355hp AMG CLA45s. I imagine the S3 will likely top out at $50k. An Audi TTRS is $60k. So why not a 400hp $50k Golf R?
Personally, I'm looking at an Audi S3 so I can have a grown up Evo.

Anyone tempted to trade an Evo for a new Golf might want to try this experimenter first. Weld the center diff into a spool, but also strip the output to the rear axle. Swap in the Tommi Mak pressure switch for the ACD/AYC pump, swap the rear diff for a Salisbury, and reprogram the ACD to be very aggressive on accel, open on deccel, and the AYC to never be active. Voila! An Evo X with a homemade Haldex.
in regards to interior and build quality: we bought a 2004 GTI VR6 for my girl. even with 70k miles and 10yrs of being driven, it's still extremely solid. nothing inside or outside has worn or broken. no missing stereo knobs, no busted handles. the doors close as solidly as my old 525i. you would never guess it's age. everything just works. it's a great car and super comfortable on road trips. any time we're going out of town, we take the VW and leave the Evo at home.

I hear you on the S3. I'm waiting to see how that is when it gets here.
I really enjoyed my MK6 Golf R when I had it.
